Warren County is one of the negro counties of the State and h fir white citizens are feeling the misrule in that county that fusion has brought upon them. IT ml or Democratic rule the county was principally govern ed by white men, although the negroes were largely in the ma jority. The Populists and Re publicans fused in that county two years ago and now the ma iority of the officers of the coun ty are negroes. So strong have the netrroes become in this county that the Republicans held a convention last week and nominated negroes for all the county offices except a sheriff. " The Populists in Warren coun ty are white men and will they allow themselves to vote for these negroes to be elected, or will they join with the Demo crats for a white man's govern ment in Warren county? A principle that does not protect your own home and fireside first is worse than no principle. The white people of Warren t county own the property and and it has one of the most in telligent white citizenships of any county in the State. The crowd to get in, now the Pop ulists are left out in the cold. It was the deal of the Repub lican party in, the State to fuse with the Populists, get in power and then take all . the offices, thinking that the Populist par ty would be so divided that it would enable them to retain their places. A continuance of Republican (negro) rule in the State is entirely in the hands of the Populist party. Will they . jui a wan mu wiiiie mjen the Democratic party for govern ment by white men or will they make it possible by voting the other way to continue the pres ent rule? We shall see. In these times of war every one is interested in the strength of our navy and army and the size of our guns. The largest gun which Uncle Sam has is a coast defense gun which shoots a steel projectile sixteen.-inches in diameter, weighing 2,300 pounds. A test of these guns has been made and it shoots in to an obstruction fixed for a target a distance of of 38 feet ami four inches. The obstruc tion was made first of 28 inches of solid steel "armor plate, back of which was a solid oak wall twenty feet thick, back of this was a solid wall made of granite five feet thick and back of con crete twenty feet thick. This made a solid wall of steel", oak, granite and concrete 47i feet thick. The great gun was fired at close range to this target and the ball penetrated it just 38 feet 4 inches. A shot fired from one of these guns would pene trate the heaviest armor on any of Spain's ships and go half through the vessel at a dis tance of five miles or more. Spain has some big guns also and some splendid ships, but her guns are not so trge nor as ours. have so long a range Ihe biggest guns carried on our vessels are on the battle ships Indiana, Massachusetts, and Oregon. They shoot a pro jectile of 13 inches in diameter and would penetrate the armor of any of Spain's warships. Truly the works of man are wonderful and the death deal- lug power or tne latest inven- tions of guns is almost mar velous. ' There has been a good deal of discussion in the papers re cently about the Catholic church being disloyal to the United btates and in sympathy with Spain. There may be some few individual Catholices in this country that are in sympathy with Spain but the majority of them are loyal to the flag of their country and many of them were engaged with Admiral Dewey in the great battle of Manila last Sunday was a week'. The Catholic likes free govern ment as well as any class and in this country the idea of sep arating cfiurch and State is growing among them POPULIST COUNTY CONVEN TION. The Populist county conven tion met at Lillingtou Monday and was permanently organiz ed by the election of H. N. Biz- zell, Esq., chairman, ana Messrs F. L. Parker and J. W. Pipkin, secretaries. The con vention unanimously adopted the following resolutions : First, That we, the People's party of Harnett county, here by re-affirm our allegiance to our National and State plat forms, and point with pride to the efforts of our United States Senator and Congressmen in trying to restore to this Nation a "government of the people, for the people and by the peo ple. Second, That we hereby de clare our willingness to co operate with any party, or the fraction of any party, upon the lines of these principles. Third, We favor an amend ment to our- school law that will give to each race the right to govern its own schools. Delegates to the State Con gressional and Judicial con ventions were appointed. Z. T. Kivett, Esq., sent in his resignation as chairman of the executive committee of the party and Mr. J, McKay Byrd was unanimously elected chair man for the next j two -years After resolutions - thanking Chairman Kivett for the man a?ement of the party for six years the convention adjourn ed. There was quite a number of representative Populists of the county present and the meeting was harmonious. Jboui townships were not represent ed. Two Millions a Year. If this searchlight was placed, in the town of Dunn on an elevation of three hundred feet and turned westward, there is not a place in Harnett county but what a person could read newspaper readily from its light the darkest night that - 1IT1 i 1 1 1 -i comes, wnen this fight is placed in position at Fortress Monroe, a vessel can be seen coming in fifty miles out at sea on a dark night, and should the light be thrown up in the heav ens, we doubt not but what the light, reflecting on the.heavens, could be seen from Dunn. We notice that the second number of . the Little River Record published at Poe's, this county, by Rev. J. A. Camp bell, contains a splendidly writ ten article on the "History of Dunn Baptist church by our townsman, Mr. J. C. Clifford. From it we learn that the Dunn Baptist church was established in 1884 with a membership of eleven by the labors of Revs. A. B. Alderman and W. R. Johnson, and was organized at Greenwood school house, one mile east of town and was known as Greenwood Baptist church. It now has the largest membership and the most com modious building--in the town. When the town was built up and its present house of wor ship built the name was chang ed to Dunn Baptist church. Since its- organization it has had eight pastors. 'Efforts are now being made for the construction of an annex to be used as a Sunday school class room. Discovered by a Woman. Another great discovery has been made, and that too, by a lady in this country. "Disease fastened its clutches upon her and for seven years she with stood its severest tests, but her vital organs were undermined and death seemed imminent. For three months she coughed incessantly, and could not sleep. She finally discovered a way to recovery, by purchasing of. us a bottle of Dr. King's New Dis covery for Consumption, and was so much relieved on tak ing first dose, that she slept all night ; and with two bottles, has been absolutely cured. Hall, who has moved here from Cameron, will commence in a few days to erect his large saw mill and lumber plant here just north of the town. He has purchased the timber on Taylor & Slo comb's turpentine farm four and u, lialr miles west of towTn and will build a, road and put iron rails on it out to the tim ber which he will haul with an engine and cars here to cut it into lumber. It is estimated that there is about eight million feet of lumber on the farm, enough to keep a mill at work three years. Mr. Hall is an experienced mill man and has been conduct ing, an extensive lumber busi ness in Moore county. Some of our colored citizens have spoken favorably of the plank in our platform adopted by the mass meeting at Lilling ton which declares that we fa vor the management of tjie colored schools by the colored people. One of them remarked to us that that plank would elect the Democratic party. Under the Democratic law the negro was allowed to run his own schools but! so soon as the Republicans, the great friends of the negro ( ?), got in power they took this privili ge away from him, and the negro has seen it with great disgust The intelligent negroes can see and know which party has been their friends. They have tried their own party now and it has proven false to its promises , to tfiem.
