THE COUNTY UNION WEDNESDAY, Junk 15. ls;.S. DUNN, N. C. LOCAL DOTS, Cotton is cents to-da". selling for G Some of our Gardners s;iv tlicy have corn almost ripe mid wi'ii have roasting ears in a lew davs. Mr. E. Lee has moved his harness shop back to his old -tand next dor to Gerald's -tables. The ( Jeorgia watermelon is ripe now and train loads of l hem pass every day for the northern markets. The harvesting and thresh ing of wheat has begun in this section and we learn that the yield is very good. - It- is stated now that ' the huckleberry crop is almost a failure this year. The bushes (lid not . bloom well in the Spring. ' Splendid rains fell here Sunday afternoon and Monday .night. The ihost of the farm ers will finish planting pota toes this week. Then have' been quite a number of people going and coming this ; week that we know but we have not space to men l ion their n;. mes. Mr. John Monk, of Newton drove, has accepted a position with Mr. J. AV. Gregory, and will be pleased to have his friends call and see him. The turpentine farmers sav that the war has reduced the price on crude turpentine about the only article that has been. lowered in price by the war scare. Mr. Thomas M. Hall has his sawmill in operation now and is sawing cross ties for his -rnn: l'oad which he is push ing forward rapidly. He has it completed 'about a mile. A little colored boy about eight years of age, son of Mary J'Yrguson, who lives near the Baptist church, died Friday morning after a few days illness with a severe form of dTsentery.. Large quantities of home made bacon are sold on this market by the farmers of the surrounding - sections. Nicely cured. liams are in demand and readilv sell for ten cents a pound. ' - . We are informed that our papers for Poe's failed to reach that oflice last Thursday morn ing. This was carelessness in some one who handles the mail on the route and we trust it will not happen so again. The first ripe peaches we have seen here, were on the market Monday. The largest we have seen were shown us Tucsda" morning by ottr townsman Mr. . I Shell, who has several trees loaded with them. - Thei;e was quite a heavy .wind storm west of here Sun day afternoon, which blew down fence and timber. Near Turlington's Cross Roads four pines were blown across the telephone, wire and broke it. Nothing adds more to the looks of your home than a nicely painted house. Before leting your contract for painting see A. 1). Newberry, who will make you '.liberal figures and guaran tee, satisfaction. . Round 'trip tickets can be secured over the Coast Line- to Sniithiield, beginning to-day and good until" Saturday, for So cents from Dunn, on account of the commencement of Tur lington Institute. Several of our people will likely attend. The lightning struck the telephone wire on the Lilling ton line Monday ! night and went to the ground at two 'nhones in town. No damage -was done" to the 'phones or line. ; It is said that a tele phone 'properly put up is a protection to a house against lightning. Sargeant W. II. Ilaigh and Corporal Landon Jones of Com pany A. (Fayetteville Independent-Light' Infantry), second North Carolina regiment, pass ed here yesterday on the noon train going to Raleigh with ten recruits which they had secured at Fayetteville for their cora gany." All the companies in both regiments are after re cruits to make the full comple ment of 10G men to each company. Regular services were held at the Baptist church Suiidav morning and night, and large congregations enjoyed two able sermons by the pastor, Rev. L. R. Carroll. After the morning services the communion table was spread and the sufferings and death of the risen Christ were commemorated. Remember you don't have to send your job work away. We are here for the purpose of trying to help build up "the town, and by patronizing us you keep your money at home and thereby help yourself. We will duplicate the prices of any legitimate house. See us before sending vour work away. The town Marshal informs us that some person or persons are guilty of leaving 4 dead animals within the corporate limit of the town. Special effort will be made to find the guilty party or parties, and if found a heavy fine will be im posed. If anything is found dead on your lot inform the Marshal and he will have it re moved at once. It was reported here yes terday that the seventeen-vear-old son of Elder W. G. Turner, who lives at Turlington, had gone to Raleigh and volunteer ed in-the army without the con sent of his father. The enlist ing officers are not allowed to take boys under the age of 18 years without the consent of parents. One boy under age joined the first regiment and went to Jacksonville with it. His father got him out only by an act of congress. War is not play and when once in there is no wav to get out until time of enlistment has. expired, unless released by the government. - The Cape Fear Guards meet again Friday night to drill. Every member is earn estly requested to be present. It is hoped that the citizens of the town will give this .com pany their united influence. A military company will be of help to the" town and we need one for protection, for we know not at what time we mav need the services of a company. There is art old adage which says; "In times of peace pre pare for war." Our govern ment has found recently the need of a large army and had to build it. In the future out standing army will be much greater than it has been. Our readers remember the marriage of Miss Lena Stewart, of. Averasboro,--to Prof. H. V, Moulton, of Texas, about a year ago, and her many friends throughout- this section will be pleased to learn that they have come to North Carolina to live. They arrived here several days ago and are at present with Mrs. Stewart, at Averasboro, Mrs. Moulton's mother. Prof. Moul ton was a widower and had five children, and these are with him and his wife. He was superin tendent of the Public schools of Wylie, Collin county, Texas, which position he has resigned We are informed that he will spend this year here and will probably give up teaching and engage in farming. The Un ion wishes him a pleasant home among us. " Gen. E. G. Harrell, of Ral eigh, Quarter-master General of the first regiment of North Carolina volunteers now in camp at Jacksonville, Fla., was on the noon train Sunday going-to Raleigh. He stepped off the train here and spoke to his father and mother, Rev. and Mrs. W. B. Harrell, who were there to see him. He said that the North Carolina boys were in fine spirits and liked Jack sonville ; that the weather was fine down there and that the health of the regiment was nood ; that the bovs had to sleep under blankets at night and that the heat was not so op pressive as it was here Sunday. Gen. Harrell came home with the detail for recruits. He left word here that he would like to have as manyas twenty volun teers from Dunn, but up to this writing there have been none to volunteer. lluckleii's Arnica. Salve. The attempt by some of Dunn's enternrisiiifr citizens to develop -a big industrial plant! on Smilev's Falls has been! abandoned. This failure is due to their inability to secure a clear title to the property. Mr. John M. Hays, a civil engineer from Petersburg, Va., has been engaged for some time in de termining what property would be required and what the sibilities of the Falls were pos Mr. Hay's states that the possibili ties for power, as gathered from this preliminary examination, are good, but that the cost of development would be enor mous. A canal nearly five miles long would be required, with ' full development, with heavy cutting through the whole wav. The geitflemen interest ed had been in communication with capitalists who had prom ised to come down and look at the Falls if a clear title could be secured at reasonable, fig ures. It will be much regretted by all intrested in the welfare of Harnett county that the dif ficulties in the way have caused the failure of the project. Millions Given Away. It is certainly gratifying to the public to know of one con cern in the land who are not afraid to be generous to the needy and suffering. The pro prietors of Dr. King's New Discovery for consumption, coughs, and colds, have given away over ten million trial bot tles of this great medicine ; and have the satisfaction" of know ing it has absolutely cured thousands of hopeless cases. Asthma, .v- bronchitis, hoarse ness and all diseases of the throat, chest and lungs are surely cured by it. Call on N. B. Hood, druggist, and get a trial bottle free. Regular size 50c. and $1.00. Every bottle guaranteed, or price refunded. Indicted for Retailing Brandy. Saturday afternoon a young man named M. A. Warrick, of near Newton Grove, was before U. S. Commissioner J. B. Hol land; on the charge of selling liquor witout license and op erating an illicit distillery. There was no evidence before the court that the young mam had operated an illicit distillery but was bound over to the term of the Federal court at in the sum of $100 to Raleigh answer the other charge. The evidence was that the young man, whose character was proven good by his neigh- bors men of character, did on or'about Christmas two years ago let three of his neighbors have a pint of brandy each for which he received twenty-five cents for each pint. There was no evidence that he had sold any before or since that time. The young man violated the law but three sales does not make a very strong case of carrying on the business. - The officers have done their duty. But the man who betrayed this young man did it probably for value re ceived from the government and had it not been for that this young man would never have been arrested. If the informer got brandy from him and then gave tlie information to the government two years after, for ten dollars, he is much meaner of the two. The the spy system is a bad one and we are glad to know that the approp riation for such work has been cut off. A Large Rattle Snake Killed. Last Saturday afternoon while Mr. Noah Barefoot, Jr who lives in Sampson about " i A five miles from here, was work ing in his melon patch he found a laro-e snake.. He sent to the TO" house after his gun and shot and killed it. It proved to be a rattler and had twelve rattles and a button. It was four feet and two inches long after its head was shot off. The track it miade where it crawled was" three and a half inches across. Quite a number of people went to see the snake Sunday as it is seldom a rattler is found in this section. It had just shed its old skin and its color was very bright. Mr. Barefoot will keep the rattles. I"yeryIIy Suys So.
