The New Bright Tobacco Market of Eastern North Carolina. The new tobacco market of Dunn N. C, opened ou the 1st day. of August with the two large warehouses well filled with tobacco, the sales for "the day amounting to GO, 000 pounds and the market has had sales every day since. gooa The market is backed up with ; a good corps of buyers, who have orders from some of the largest tobacco firms in the country. The town is located in the center of a largo area of country celebrated for the growth of fine briglit tobacco, extending for a distance of about twenty five to thirty miles in each direction, and has the brightest outlook of any of the new tobacco markets in the State. The tobaccos be ing marketed are of a superior ckaracter. and are well handled before being brought to market which being a new industry in dicates unusual intelligence and alertness oh the part of the farmers who own the lands they cultivate. Dunn is the biggest town for its age in the State, and is also one of the liveliest towns of its size to be met with anywhere. The town was incorporated in 18S7 with a population of 150, and to-day it has a population of from 1,500 to 2,000, has two large .warehouses for the sale of leaf tobacco, two furniture fac tories, and the largest factory for the manufacture of turpen tine tools in the world and an other in course of construction; a turpentine still, one bank and another being, organized, two cotton gins, two lumber nulls, one buggy factory and six white and three colored churches. ' Dunn is in Harnett county, on the main line of the Atlantic Coast Line Railway, fifty miles from Wilson on the north, and twenty-five miles from Fayette- ville on the South. Ihe aggre irate of the diversified interests of the town are immense. The turpentine interest amounts to over $10,000 annually ; the cot ton business amounts to between ten and twelve thousand bales a year, while the leaf tobacco business, which is in its infan cy, will amount to at least a millionwjf a half pounds the presentr season, and will no doubt more than be doubled each year for the next three or four years. The town is rapidly building up, and beside the industrial building being erected, numer ous handsome homes are going up in different sections of the town. Among the enterprises in contemplation is a cotton mill, to be run by electric power pro duced from the falls of the Cape Fear river, a few "miles' from the town. The hotel accommodations of the town are good. Mr. Jno. A. Oates, the proprietor of the Hotel Divine feeds well and al ways has a nice cl-ban room for the weary traveller. Among the dealers of tobac co located here is Messrs. J. E. Bovd & Co., manufacturers, exporters, or any other parties in want of bright leaf could irot do better than place their orders with this firm, the lar gest and best buvers of leaf on this market. They are good judges of the leaf, ipver watchful of the interests of their many customers, and honest to the last degree. The Tobacco Jour nal, Danville, Va. The above article was writ ten by Mr D. E. Graham, the editor of the Journal. Mr. Graham was here recently and visited the sales of our ware houses, and on his return home he penned the article. He is an experienced tobacconist, and his kind words of our tobacco market and town are appreci- ited. Ei.
