THE Democratic Banner. ~ OUNN, N. C. \VKDNE>D\T. May 2s I! 01. LOCAL LOTS. seIIEIVULE OF TRAINS LEAVING DUNN. Northbound Local I'assen. r,M\ No. 78, at 1 :0o p. m. No -32, 10 :5G p. ra. Southbound Local Passen ger, No. 23, 8 :40, p\ m. No. 35, 11 :09. P- m —Cotton to-day. —Some men will pay $1.50 for whiskey for medical pur poses aud then kick over a prescription at the drug store. Mayor John A. Gates served beans at his hotel from jus garden last Sunday. He -hipped two crates Monday. —We have heard from the •'enterprise" mentioned in this paper.a few weeks ago. It is 4ill doing business at the same old stand. —The farmers say that "Gen. • ireen" has about captured • heir farms, and unless they ran get sufficient help their crops will suffer. —lt is stated that the Cape Fear rose 10 feet in one hour during the heavy rains last week. The statement is vouch ed for. —"Now, gentlemen," said the professor, "name some of the beauties of education." And a facetious student in the back row shouted: "Pretty school teachers!" Mr. Harry Jordan has ac cepted a position with Mr. C. L. Wilson and has charge of the cold drink department. He will keep the boys cool and pitch ball. —Those attending the com mencement at Buie's C reek la-i Thursday found it difficult to cross the streams along the roads. We have heard of no accident thus far. —Hon. D. H. McLean has been invited and has accepted the invitation to deliver an ad dress at Siler City July 4th. Those who attend may expect to be highly entertained. The 'Phone lines have been out of fix this week on account of putting in lightning arrest ers which will give the much desired protection which our people want. —We have copy on the hook for a change in the "ad ' of the Dunn Hardware & Furniture Co. They have one of the best tobacco sprayers in the country. See them before buying. —The bridge at Fayetteville was reported burned last week hut it is not true. It was thought one time it would be necessary in order to save the steel bridge just below it. —The school taught by Miss Emma Young will give an exer cise at the Planter's Warehouse next Friday night, June Ist. Tli. Hand will furnish music for the occasion. All are invited. —The Cape Fear river was the highest last week ever kii"\vn before. At Fayetteville it v> :i- ]itore than three feet higher th . i the Populist freshet which v - :he highest known to the inhabitants. —lt is said that the tallest in the service of the I ted States Army comfcs from . terland county. He is (5 ie : uid 7 inches in his stock i:i_ : t. His name is John B. M- V::i and is 25 years of age. —• The doctor said I ought to change of climate. ' re in :d the vacation-seeking wi. "That's lucky," replied t': foxy husband. "I notice th.,- the Weather Bureau pre di" r s cold rain, followed by a hoi . dry spell." -We learn that the bridge Con: inv at work on the bridge ilington lost about s>• v '" of material in the high last week. About 125 - of cement and several - .nd feet of lumber were ■'i down the river. nooks" sent us a full re- Buie's Creek commence yesterday, but it came af had already put a con report of it in type. We !'■. we did not get it earlier for ,i; appreciate his kindness in - tiding it. --Fanners in the western P" ' of the State are almost to ' ruined from the effect of rains and high water, wheat crops are totally In McDowell county : lie loss is estimated at . M). The loss in Harnett along the Cape Fear been considerable and is i»»: '-siblo to estimate just now. —Mr. Ralph Kin law, of this place, was called to Fayette ville Monday night by telegram, | his. brother Mr. P G. Kiniaw, a contractor, having fallen f'om the 2nd story of a building Monday evening. He was dangerously hurt but is still living. —We are informed that all the bridges on »the other side of Cape Fear river are gone, save one and that stands on lower Little River. All the bridges on Upper Little river are gone and only one is left between Fayetteville ai-d Moore con my. —We notice that all the filth of the town is carried off in a Southwestern direction from the town, and it is not carried any great distance. As a rule the breeze in the summer comes from this direction and the peo ple get the full benefit of the delightful (?) odor. Would it not be better to put t lie tilth on the Northern side of town? —The little six-months-old child of Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Kiulaw r , of this place, died Sun day at 12 o'clock and was buried Monday evening at 2 o'clock, Rev. W. A. Forbes conducting the funeral services at the residence. Mr. and Mrs. Kiniaw have the sympathy of a host of friends —We have copy on file for a change in Gaiuey & Jordan's "ad" but owing to a rush of work are unable to make the change this week. You will find this tfrm always ready to extend every accommodation to their customers. They carry a well selected line of jewelry at all times. —A game of ball lias been arranged, between Smithfield and Dunn to be played on the ground here next Thursday evening June Gtli. Smithfield lias some crack players and the game promises to be one of the best played here during .the sea son. Smithfield has hired sev eral good players and will bring a good battery. —We are requested to an nounce that the commencement at Benson Academy, Benson. N. C., will take place Friday night June 7th. On account of tlie large crowd expected the mammoth tobacco warehouse just erected will be used. The programme will consist of 'plays, dialogues, declamations, recitations, songs, drills, etc. —lt has been suggested and we think it a good one, that we have an old time "road day" in Dunn and work tlio streets. On main street there are many holes four and five inches deep and it is dangerous to drive your horse out of a walk. We would also suggest that the crowd be divided up aud have -onie of the side walks cleared off. The boxes, counters, barrels, etc, occupy much of the space needed by the public. This work should not be delayed and one man should be hired and paid to superintend the work—lds name we will call "chief." —On Thursday, May 24, while the Cape Fear river was at its highest there came down the river a circular saw mill com plete. Mr. '/. T. Kivett who lives at McNeill's Ferry saw it, aud with his boys went in pur suit and over took it at what is known as Big Island in Bmy leys Falls. After several hours hard work they succeeded in landing the entire mill and fixtures on safe grounds. The peculiar part of it is that when captured the saw was running, slowly of course, caused by the current or swiftness of the water. The owner can get the mill back by paying the expense of captur ing it. - —Monday was a busy day in courts of justice. One day hist week a young man named Sam Wade sold Mr. Moscow Butler a cow which he butchered and offered for sale on the market. Mr. James Allen Norris missed his cow and came to Mr. Butler soon after the beef was dressed and asked permission to exam ine the hide, the marks, etc. He found it to be his cow, and a warrant was issued against Mr. Butler. The trial lasted all Monday afternoon concluding late that night. It was heard by Justices (.'reel and Shell, who gave a verdict of not guil ty in behalf of Mr. Butlei. Ihe voting man Wade had made good his escape before the trial. Six lawyers were employed in the case and it was one of much j interest. The attorneys made able speeches which attracted at least two hundred spectators. ICE ! • ICE ! T am prepared this season to furnish you with ice and will deliver it anvwhere in town. JNO. A. GATES.
