It is remarkable how little respect some Young men seem to have *> O for the young ladies. —Dr. Clarence Porter Jones, the eve, ear and nose specialist of Newport News, will be in Dunn November 18th and 19th, and at Benson 20th and 21st. Let those who have work to do call these days. —President Roosevelt has issued his proclamation, fixing Thursday, Nov. 28th, as a day of national thanksgiving. It would be nothing amiss for our people to have a thanksgiving service in some or all of the churches, or all come together and return thanks to our Maker in a body. —Rev. J. W. Jenkins, Super intendent of the Methodist Or phanage at Raleigh, made a vi.-it to Dunn last Saturday, preaching on Sunday night in the interest of the institution to the edification and instruc tion of the audience; after which a collection and sub scription was taken, amounting to $17.75. Mr. Jenkins left a good impression. The movement for the organ isation of the reading room and gymnasium among the young men of the town is jvell under way. The Metropolitan Company has secured the well known Herald Square Opera Company fnr the opening of the new j Opera House, Thursday Nov. '2lst. This was certainly a m ister stroke business foresight j on the part of the local manager • for the company is unqrcstion j ably the strongest traveling. [Again we congratulate the loc;d j management and wish the same success in securing future attractions. The Ralei ji Po«t of 22nd contains the following : A "BRtLI.IANT GPENJXG. "With snap and dash, new costumes, really pivtty girls with good voices and a sextette inaie chorus, our old friends the Herald Fquare Opera certainly made an au spicious opening. The com pany is larger and stronger than has been here for man} a year, and added a host of new admirers at the Academy last night. "Several new members have strengthened the cast since last season, foremost among them is Laura Clement, a proma donna new to the South. She ably sustained her recognized reputation, as did Harry Nel son, George MacF&rlane, the possessor of a magniiicie-nj bar itone voice installed himself a favorite and responded to sev eral recalls. Henry Lane as i Rocco and jolly Tom CaHahan the Prince fired incessant vol leys of jokes and quibs, to the intense amusement of both par quet and gallery. Pastor Barrett preached two good sermons at the Baptist church Sunday morning and night. In the afternoon Sunday a meeting was held in the church for the young people. —On examination for a cer tificate to teach public school a man made answer to the follow ing question : Question; Is the office of superintendent of public insti tutions a sinecure, if not, why not? \ Answer: The superintend ent of public institutions is not a sinecure and never was, be cause Congress exempted all executive officers. This young man wanted first grade. —The Sheriff informs us that after the tax books for the sev eral townships are given out to the deputies there will be no such thing as paying your tax at the Court House. You will have to pay direct to the depu ties, as it causes considerable confusion to receive the tax after the deputies have the books. The sheriff will in struct the deputies to add cost, levy and sell as -they go. As taxes are already high enough it is good business sense to set tle now and save cost. —Last Sunday the Young People's Sunday School Union met at the Baptist church. Though the first meeting of the Union, it was well attended. The committee on exercises had prepared an attractive program, and short addresses were made by Moderator W. B. Harrell, Rev. W. C. Its object is to make some united well directed effort towards the moral training of the children. The next meet ing will be in the Presbyterian church next Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock. Let all attend. Chamberlain's Stomach and Liver Tablets cure biliousness, and headache. They are easy to take and pleasant in effect, for sale by Hood & Grantham. SOLDIER SPEAKS OF THE PHILIP- P - 1 4 As I am a native of Harnett I would have the readers of the BANNER know the true descrip tion of the Philippine Islands, i The Philippines are a hunch of i trouble gathered together on the I Western horizon of unciviliza jfion. They are hounded on the ! north by rock's and destruction ; : on the oust by typhoons ; on the isouth, by canibals and earth quakes and on the west by hoo jdoos and smugglers. The soil is extraordinary fertile produc ing large crops of insurrection | and ti'ickery The climate is i pleasant and healthful for scor pions,'izzards, centipedes, sharks and alligators. The.principle exports are rice, hemp, sick soldiers and war bulletins. The principal imports are American soldiers, arms, ammunition.beer and tobacco. IRA V. WKBB Co. E. 21st Infantry, Manila, P. I. "Last winter an infant child of mine had croup in a violent form," says Elder John W. Rodgers, a Christian Evange list/of Filley, Mo., "I gave her a few doses of Chamberlain's Cough Remedy and in a short .time all danger was past and the child recovered." This rem edy not only cures croup, but when given as soon as the first symptoms appear, will prevent the attack. It contains'no opi um or other harmful substance and may be given as confident ly to a baby as to an adult. For sale by Hood & Grantham. The size of the ootton crop last year and the price it was sold at brought enough money to many to enable them to save an adequate amount to buy their groceries and guanos this year for cash. But they did not save it. We are told by many in honest confession that they recklessly bought this and that they could have done with out and felt no discomfort thereby. The consequence is that they have occasion to la ment their folly in the light of the size and price of the cotton crop they are now marketing. A full crop next year can leave no net earning, for it will take all clear gains to pay up losses sustained this year. The wisest course is for the farmer to re solve firmly that he will accu mulate enough over current needs to pay cash for his ferti lizers and groceries. A life of mortgaging crops in advance, as is the custom, affects the very manhood of our people, and along with this evil is a long train, such as impaired energies, dissipated aspirations and temptations to dishonesty. —Lumber Bridge News.
