Chesnutt called the convention to order at 11 :'6O o'clock and asked Mr. Jas. A. Wellons to act as temporary chairman, and T. IT. McNeill as secretary. Upon motion the temporary organization was made permanent. All members of the Democratic press were asked to act as secretaries. Tho following gentlemen were elected an executive viz: H. B. Chestnut,of Sampson, W. A. Stewatt, of Harnett, and J. T. Ellington, of Johnston. Mr. Chestnut was re-elected chair man of the committee. Upon motion by Mr. J. C. Clifford, tho convention pro ceeded to nominate candidates for the Senate. Mr. John A. Naron, of Smith field, in a few appropriate words placed Hon. C. W. Richardson, of Johnston county in nomina tion for the Senate, and Mr. 11. A. Grady, of Sampson, placed the name of Hon. 11. L. Godwin in nomination for the Senate, from Harnett in an eloquent and able manner. Mr. M. F. Hatcher, one of Dunn's young attorneys, sec onded the nomination of Mr. Richardson in a very pleasing manner. Mr. W. W. Cole, one of Smith field's able lawyers, in a few well-chosen words seconded the nomination of Mr. Godwin. There being no other nomina tions it was moved that' these two gentlemen be nominated by acclamation., and without a dissenting voice, they were nominated by acclamation. Mr. Richardson was called upon and in a short but able speech accepted the nomination and promised the people of this district that nothing would be left undone that would benefit his people. Mr. Godwin responded to a call in a manner that character ized him as an ideal man for the Senate. He also promised the people of the three counties to leave uo stone unturned that would aid them in any way. In the nomination of these two gentlemen the convention made no mistake. They are both loyal Democrats and will girdle the whole armor of Democracy about them and go into this campaign with re newed energy and fight un ceasingly for the cause of their party. The district should feel proud that such men as these have been placed on their ticket, for with them in the Senate they have nothing to fear. They will ever be watchful, and look after our interests. Hon. E. W. Pou,one of North Carolina's able Congressmen, made an able and eloquent speech showing why it was nec essary for the standard bearers of democracy to go into the tight again as they have for years past, as they had the same enemy to meet, but with a new face. He discussed in a short measure national politics, referring to his trip to Maine by saying the people there were thoroughly aroused on the po litical issues that confront the people now. Mr. Pou has a commanding appearance and a How of language with which he can hold an audience spell bound for hours. Johnston county should feel proud that she has such a man within her borders. After Mr. Pou's speech Mr. Mr. Clifford offered the follow ing resolution, which was adopted : Be it resolved by the Demo cratic Convention of the loth Senatorial district, that in view of the relative Democratic strength of tho respective coun ties composing this, the loth Senatorial district, it is the sense of this convention that the county of Johnston is en titled to one Senator each term and that the counties of Har nett and Sampson alternate each succeeding term in the selection of the other Seuator fro which the district is entitled. Resolved, further, that in the future, as it has this day, this convention endorse the candi date selected by the county con vention of the county entitled to name the Senatorial candi date. After the adoption of this res olution the convention ad journed, each man promising that he would do all in his power to roll up a big majority at the November election. FORTUNE FAVORS A TEXAN. "Having distressing pains in head, back and stomach, and being without appetite, I began to use Dr. Kings New Life Pills, writes W. P. Whitehead, of Kennedale, Tex., "and soon felt like a new man. Infallible in I stomach and liver troubles.! Only 25c at C. L. Wilson's drug ■ store. i Republican Corvention. The Republican convention was pulled oil'at Greensboro last week. Boss Pritcliard and his followers held a lively cir cus. The strong feature of the convention '.vast-lie endorsement of Tlios. N. Hill, of Halifax county, for Chief Jus ice. Mr. Hill has heretofore been con sidered a democrat, but the sight of office —a sight i 3 all lie can ever obtain, caused him to proselyte, to leave the party ot the people, the party which at all times and under all circum stances since its organization by the great friend of the masses of the people, Thomas Jefferson, has stood for tho goverment by the people. This party has been abandoned by him, and he, like Billy Day and Fabius H. Bus bee, has gone horse and dragoon into the Republican party. Another indication of the said convention points clearly to the fact that the efforts of the Re publicans in this campaign will be to :£cure the Legislature and elect Senator Pritcliard to the United States Senate again next winter. A prominent man in the town of Dunn stated to us a few days ago that he had been ofiored money and a good sum, to run for the Legislature in this coun ty as an Independent. They hope to get enough independ ents in the field to so divide the party that the Democrats can not poll their strength, and thereby let the Republican can didate or such independents as will promise to vote for Pritcli ard be elected. This policy will lie carried out until the election. Pritcliard and Hannah will not spare the boodle to put inde pendents in the field. When you see or hear of such inde pendents, be sure you investi gate the iulluences that caused his independentism, and we pre dict that when you do that something along the line sug gested above will be revealed. Why should a Democrat now turn radical? Is it because the Democratic party has eliminat ed the negro and made it im possible for bad government again in the) State? If that be so, then why not stand by the party that made these things possible. The Republicans of this State have inaugurated a policy to distintergate the Dem ocratic party of the State and they will not be scrupulous as to the methods employed to carry out this campaign. Que method is to advocate independ ency on the part of the Demo cratic voters. When you hear this kind of talk you can at once spot Pritcliard and his coliart? as the originators. A BOY'S WILD RIDE FOR LIKE. With family around expecting him to die, and a son riding for life, 18 miles, to get Dr. King's New Discovery for Con sumption, Coughs and Colds. W. 11. Brown, ofLeesville. Ind. endured death's agonies from asthma, but this wonderful medicine gave iustant relief and soon cured him. He writes : "I now sleep soundly every night." Death ot Miss Mollic Setwart. The death of Miss Mollie Stewart, daughter of Mr. J. A. Stewart of Troy ville. this coun ty, occurred at the home of her father last week. She had beeii co.ifinrd to her room with con sumption for several months and had been in declining health for several years. She leaves a father, three brothers and one-sister to mourn her untimely departure. She was only about thirty years old. The many friends of the famiiy recognize that the co m munity lias lost a model young woman, amiable in disposition and bearing high ideals of life and character; the father, broth er, and sister a true and de voted daughter and sister. We extend to the bereaved familv and friends our tenderest sym pathy. A PARSON'S NOBLE- ACT. "I want, all the world to know," writes Rev. C. J. Bud long, of Ashaway, R. 1., "what a thoroughly good and reliable medicine I Tound in Electrec Bitters. They cured me of jaun dice and liver troubles that had caused me great suffering for i many years. For a genuine, all around cure they excel anyth ing I ever saw." Electric Bit ters are the surprise of all i'or their wondeful work in liver. Kidney and Stomach troubles. Don't fail to try them* Only 50 cts. Satisfaction is guarnteed by C. L. Wilsou. Mr £. R. MtKeihan Candidate Mr. E. R. McKethan has an nounced himself an independ ent candidate for congress in the Sixth Congressional dis trict. Mr. McKethan was a member of the last General As sembly. The Wilmington Mes senger has a very sensible edi torial on this action which we give below : The Messenger, along with many other friends of Mr. E. R. McJvethan, of FayeUeville, is grieved to hear that he has kicked out of Democratic traces and declared himself an inde pendent. candidate for congress against the nominee of the party with which he has heretofore affiliated and in whose service he has done such valiant work. Mr. McKethan, we suppose, is still a supporter of the princi ples advocated by the Demo cratic party. As far as his po litical tenets are concerned lie is still a Democrat; but simply because a man he desired the Democrats to nominate for this office failed in securing the coveted honor, he feels justified bolting the party nomination and declaring himself an inde pendent candidate —for what purpose? To aid in electing a Republican to congress from this district. We say to aid in electing a Republican congress man, because he is well ac quainted with political status of this district and so knows that between himself and the Demo cratic nominee, even with a third man in the field, there can be but one result—his igno minious defeat: therefore his candidacy can do nothing but draw from Mr. Patterson the supuort of democrats who are willing in order to ''get even" with ?>lr. Patterson for defating their convention to jeopardise the Democratic cause in this dis trict. It will not be long before Mr. McKethan will deeply regret his action in this matter. He will find that it has worked great injury to himself, and what, in our estimation of the man's character, will he of greater grief to him, he will find that he has helped to blight the political prospects of a friend whom he so loyally supported for the nomination in the convention at Fayetteville. The public will be quick to come to the conclusion that this unfor tunate move by Mr. McKethan was made with the full knowledge and consent of a de feated candidate at that conven tion, but who was not willing himself to assume the attitude of an opponent of the democrat ic nominee. We predict that Mr. Mc- Kethan's candidacy will be short-lived. For his sake and the sake of the party we hope it will be ; but in the mean time he has done great harm politic ally to himself and to the frieTid whom he supported in the Fay etteville convention.
