IMPORTANT! v We are giving on the first page of this issue an article by M r. Bion Butler, to which we hope every one of our readers will give special ateention. We do . not use articles like this to fill space, but because they have an important message. If you fail to read it you will miss a treat. TO OUR CORRESPOND ENTS Let us explain that two of our office force are away this week and next with the Edenton Mili tary Company, which fact may -compell us to leave out some of -your news matter these two weeks. For the same reason the Gates county history is left out this week. We have hoped till now that the daily papers were exagger ating European affairs, but it seems that it is all too true and that the principal nations of Europe have declared war one with another, England and Ger many being the last to declare war with each other. We are giving elsewhere a table showing a comparison of schools in Newton, Mass., and in Edenton. These figures are pre pared and furnished us by Prof. R. H Bachman. As stated in last week's paper, we wish our readers to begin thinking about the proposed amendments to the constitution of North Carolina. The first amendment is only a s change in phraseology, substi tuting "war between the States" for the words "insurrection or rebellion against the United States. To this we see no ob jection. V The second amendment is, briefly stated, increasing the compensation of all members of t h e ' legislature $2.00 a day, and reducing the price per MILE from 10 cents to 5 cents. This, too, we consider wise for the reasons that $6 a day now is not; as much as $4 used to be. : We believe that a man, capable of making laws for' our state should be paid for the time he is engaged in. that important duty, . and the fact that the session lasts only a short time and breaks in to a man's other business affairs. : Moreover the reduction from 10 centsa mile to 6 cents a mile is more in keeping with present day rates. When 10c a mile was put , in the constitution, it cost peopl r about ten cents a mile to go to Raleigh; It certainly ought not now be oyer 5c each way we believe 5c for both ways would be nearer right . j The " third" amendment has to d6 with taking purely local mat terskut'ol the State legislature and letting them have attention by xocai aucnonues: ior instance if .the people in . Bullfrog -town-; ship jdesire that name changed to i Toadfrog '. township, instead of 7, 1910, at the post office -at r Edenton, TEAS IN ADVANCE. Three Months: 25e. attending to such matters, let the bounty Commissioners change the name: and let the legislature spend its time and thought on matters that affect the entire state or at least more . than 'one county. This amendment we have favored for a long time. What has North Carolina to do with what Chowan county pays its jurors, for instance.? Again,j as the constitution now reads, the teim of the officers of the executive department begins "the first day of January," which may be Sunday or Satiir day or some other unsuitable day Instead of that it is proposed to change it to read "second Wednesday after the first Mon day in" January, the wisdom of which is evident. The fifth amendment provides that in case a judge of Superior court is sick or for any reason is not able to hold court an emer gency judge may be provided, thus avoiding further delay of justice. iThe general assembly should see to it that their com- pensation is not more than "reas-' ohable." The sixth amendment elimi nates three obsolete sections which were needed only when the constitution was first adopt ed and will naver be needed again except as. a matter of history, ihe amendments so far are of minor importance, yet we be lieve they - r- should be adopted But the most important of them all is yet to follow. We defer a discussion of it to a ) subsequent issue. News. The Junior Auxiliary of Saint Luke's Parish held a picnic on the Sound at Bea's fishery last Thursday which was greatly en joyed by all who attended. Miss Mabel Roper left Satur day to visit her father, Mr. L.
