About 7 o'clock a heavy rain ait in, drenching every thine for two hours. Hy lu o clock, However, the sky was clear and the people began conin-eiintiiiK near the square to watch the firemen's pa rade. When the procession moved there were near 2,000 sjK'ctators packed on the square and in windows of buildings where a view could be obtained. Cummiiigs, secretary." A committee was appointed to drall resolutions of respect to the memory ol the Ashcville firemen who lost their lives in the wreck at Ilostiau's bridge. J. W. A. tliidcr, for their addresses before the convention; to the various railroads for reduced rates, especially to the Atlantic and Newbcrn railroad company. 1 he billowing resolution was nnari nionsly adoitcd bv a rising vote: "Kesolvcd, That the heartfelt thanks of the North Carolina State I'ireincns' association be extended to the citizens ol Ashcville for their opcu-haiuleil and wholesoulcd hospitality to us while holding our convention in their beautiful city, and that we not onlv lullv appreci ate the same, but will always look back upon our visit with the greatest pleas ure. To the members of the Asheilli lire department we can only say that we 'pressed the button, they did the rest.'" Reports Irom representatives of New bcrn, Kavettcville, ('rcciisboro, liiirhaiu. Wilson, Wilmington, Ashcville, Winston, Tarboro, Kliz.ihcili City, Concord, Kal cigh, Cioldsboro and Salem, were made, and all stated a prosperous condition ol the several departments. The rules governing the races were changed to allow the hose compaims to begin the race with harness on their horses. C. S. I'owell, of Ashcville, and T. A. Green, of Newbcrn, were placed in nomi nation for President. Mr. Green was elected. The following officers were then elected by acclamation : first vice-president Geo. S. I'owell, Ashcville. Second vice-president J. I1. McNeill, r.iyetteyillc. Secretary and treasurer J. V. Griffith, Greensboro. Statistician K. G. I'arincle. Wilming ton. The Parade. The firemen's parade occurred a I. 11 o'clock this morning and was one of the leading features of Gala Week, fire Chief I'owell and Assistant Chief Mcl.oud had charge of the parade, assisted by Marshals f. V. Mitnnaugh, I'. A. fan ning, Ccph Illanton, W. . fitzgerald, J. K. Gates, and . G. Mcrrimon. The parade formed on South Main street. The order of march was: Mounted Police. The parade moved over South Main West College, I'atton avenue, Haywood, and hack to court place, where it was reviewed bv the judges, Gen. J. I). Glenn, Col. J. T. Anthony and Col. J. G. Mar tin, the committee to award the broni statue offered by Arthur M. field to the best unilormcd and drilled company. The prize was given to Greensboro Hook aud Ladder company. At 2:30 this afternoon the contests began on Montford avenue. Notes. "Mascot" George Randolph and his Angora goat "Grovcr," on the Ashcville hose carriage, caught the young folks, and the Newbcrn steamer "lilijah f.llis," caught everybody. The parade was a great big success. It was near a half-mile lung. Ashcville probably never saw such a crowd near the square as that which looked on as the laddies passed. The sight of a steamer was new to many Asheville people. The decorations on the apparatus gave a beautiful effect. The Asheville compa nies and Newbcrn made an esiiecinlly tine showing in this respect. The firemen wish to tender their thanks to the mayor, board of aldermen, advisory board, the Asheville Light In fantry, the assistant marshal and oth ers, who by their participation, helped to make the parade a success.
