SI. MONDAY. NOVEMBER 16. 1896. A WAR GOD. A few days aeo a German c flker con ceived tbat be bad been iasolted by a civilian who accidentally brushed against bim. and demanded an apology. This was refused as the accused man was guiltless of an intention to insolt the offi:er. The latter ran the civilian through the bod v, murdering him openly In the presence of others, officers and civilians. Nut only has no punisbmect ben visited on this soldier-murderer, but he is commended by Emperor William, who, relerricc to the tragedy, said to some young recruits: '"Ever remember that you have re ceived your wei-pins to protect the crown and tbe altar. The man who in sults your coat insults your king; who assaults the king's coat assaults your chief war lord." This is what it means to be uoCYr a war god even in these chiliz d times The wonder is that men who love free dom as the Germans do cn tolerate such a ruler. The wool growers, some of them, bad a meeting last week at whxh they clam ored for a high tariff on their product, so that foreign wool may be excluded and the prices of the raw article and all woolen goods as well advance. These gentlemen must have forgotten that one of the thiogs decided by the last election Is that it is wicked to legislate any value into anj thing more especially into sil ver; and that it is impossible to do it anyway. Thus we were told that if a free coinage bill passed, the silver mine owners would make untold billions, while at the same time the impossibility of legislation increasing the value of sil ver was demonstrated time and again. Sj it must be, in a measure, with wool; if tbe tariff on wool is ircreaftd tbe wool i r " . . . ..... u .vn-u ,JI VI 11 k., U 1IU also, as law cannot increase the value of anything, he will not make anything. And there you are. The wool men should wait till a little later when it will be easier for the Congressmen who must provide this increased duty to forget their arguments of the campaigu yet so recent. "HAPPENED TO.' The Charlotte Observer wants tbe judgment of the esteemed livetteville Observer on tbe following sentence from a North Carolina paper of last week : "-Vlr. happened to an ugly accident list Monday afternoon." And the Ob server adds, by wav of making the Fay etteville cont. niporary's task lighter, we suppost : 'Now. as a matter of fact, did Mr. happen V the accident or did the accident happen to hitri? If he hap- p tied to it, then the accident was not to b'ame. ' D.spite the fact that The Citizen was not called on in thi verbal emergency, we propose to "rmss" with it tor a mo ment. O ,ly to say, however, that "hap pened to an accident" is t quilly as good American as "Mr. was presented with," etc. ( to be seen inourbisf written newspapers); that 'happened to" is frt)uently met in N ,rth C&rolina r.esvj papers; that its meaning is clear, ard that, being racy acd of tbe soil, it should not be frowned upon, but t isten-i as characteristic and original. On sicond thought, "happened to an accident," may not be original with th s generation, for we recently found the word "drug," used in the sense of drag ging, in a very old English work, and "to mess with," conuion in North Caro lina, is equally to be revered bicause ot age. The fact set ms to be that, owing to the slight admixture of European blood with native North Carolinians, tbe common people bave retained in their daily speech a few words and phrases that came down to tbem from the earli eU times from their Engli-b foibearf. W. love to hear them and to "meet up with" them in North Carolina everyday literature. We therefore hope the two Observers will deal gently with these wjtd landmarks; their age alone entit'es them to respect if not to imitatii A Story of Buncombd County. From th: New York Sun. Both place and people are described with a great deal ot quaint humor and no small amount of literary skill. While the book would be improved by some judicious pruning among the brst nundred pages, the story ol Ristus," the episode of the wedding ot Black Jake and Sally, and the history of the transaction in connec- lion wuu inur v-ase noss are all ex cellent, and are woven by Miss Pool into a very delightful story. Then follows a remarkable dis play of lofty human pyramid building The rapidity, lightnse of movement and unerrng skill with which these colossal figures are formed, is one of tbe most surprising instances of athletic acrobat ism ever known.
