JAS. H. LOUGHKAN, PROP., P. O. BOX 372. The Equitables Financial Statement. It is refreshing in these times to read the state ment of any concern showing such great financial strength as that exhibited in the annual statement of the Equitable Life Assurance society, published today. Throughout the entire statement the amounts are simply colossal, but the figures that must be most interesting to the policyholders of the society are those which show the surplus over all liabilities, $43,277,1 III. There are other figures that make a magnificent showing: Assets $21f!,773,947; out standing assurance, $015,102,070 ; income, $45,011, 058 ; business written in 1896, $!27,(i!i4,084, and many others that show the immense business done by this society. These are all interesting by reason of their immensity, but after all, the foun dation stone of the strength of a life assurance company as of any other business, is surplus. There is no other business in which so much confi dence is necessary as in that of a life assurance company. The contracts issued by these companies extend into the far future, and, although they may mature tomorrow, yet on the other hand the com pany may not be called upon to pay the claim for 10, 20 or ;;o years, or even more. This being the case, absolute security should be the groat consid eration to anyone contemplating assurance, and it must certainly be difficult to find a contract more secure than one backed by $21fi,773,!)47 of assets and $43,277,17!) of surplus over all liabilities.
