It Will Report to th Directors of th Board of Trad Plans for Per manent Road Improvement. At a meeting of the direc tors of the Asheville Board of Trade 10 days ago. President T. S. Morrison was authorized to appoint a committee whose duty It should be to devise and report a plan whereby the permanent improvement of the roads of Buncombe county may be secured. This question is considered as the most vitally important to the people of the whole county that has yet been driven consideration by the Board of Trade, and realizing this fact President Morrison delayed the appointment of the committee in order that he might personally canvass the question among the members and secure the consent of the committeemen before their ap pointment was announced. Today the president announced that iie had appointed T. W. Patton, J. E. Rankin and Theo. F. Davidson as the committee, Capt. Patton being- chair man, each having given their ready consent to serve. President Morrison is an enthusiast on the good roads subject, and in a conversation with The Citizen today declared that nothing in Asheville or the county tributary to it is more needed than a system of good roads for the development of the section. "I do not anticipate a report from the committee," he said, "until the mem bers have had ample time to thorough ly weigh the matter and digest their ideas. It may be a week or it may be several weeks, but I feel sure that when the report is made the Board of Trade will have a practical plan upon which to work." It is hoped that in the end Buncombe may secure a road system that will make the improvements upon the coun ty's thoroughfares permanent. Under the system that has obtained for some e4iis the road work can be no more tiiaa temporary, and. as The Citizen has frequently pointed out. the disposi tion is too often to regard a road as completed for all time once the convict force has gone overthe route. The re sult is that the road becomes worn and, at a season when the farmer most needs it, the road is in bad condition and he finds it sometimes almost im jn.ssible to get to market. With a good road, kept up carefully j'ear by year by a repairing force, the farmer could net to market in half the time required now. his loads could be increased, dan ger of damage to his wagons and in jury to his horses would be greatly les sened, and the result would be a great lienetit to everybody concerned. The committeemen named by Presi dent Morrison are men of judgment and experience, anil the people may reasonably expect a report that will tend to start Buncombe on her good road way rejoicing.
