The weekly meeting of Zeb Vance Democratic club was well attended last evening, about 250 members and visi tors being present. President Luther read a letter from R. L. Leatherwood of Erysa.n City, stating that it was im possible for him to attend, but that he hoped to address the club later. The volunteers on the membership committee reported 106 new names, and with the addition of four more appli cants for membership in the club rooms it raised the total membership to 1039. Speeches- were called for from sev eral visitors, among them Mr. Ander son of Yancey county, Mr. Redmond of LSuncombe, ex-Sheriff Shelton of Hay wood, Herbert Ferguson, mayor of VV'aj nesvilla, Joseph Patton of Swan nanua, and Mr. Crudger of Lower Hom iny. Locke Craig, esq., addressed the club at some length, being followed by W. J. Cocke and W. H. Young, who also save interesting talks. Most of the speeches urged thorough organization of forces for the coming city election. John Y. Jordan, after stating that in the coming election the Democrats would nominate Dillon M. Luther for mayor, and would elect him by a large majority, suggested that the time had come t get down to work and that af ter the club adjourned he wanted to have a meeting of those from his ward to consult about more systematic work. This was followed by representatives of several other precincts of the city, and as son as the club adjourned these ward meetings were held in the hall and systematic work was begun in earnest. President Luther stated that Zeb Vance club was the largest political or ganization south of Mason and Dixon's line. There is a club in New Orleans, Lin s'.ilnietto. that boasted of 800 or 900 mcii'.hers. and that he was going to write the president of that body that Zi-b Vance club had crossed th? 1000 Hut and was still growing.
