G Brown Cox, pastor of St. Paul's Lutheran church, has recently received the M. A. degree from N. C. college. He is now a candidate for the Ph. D. degree of another institution. C. H. The baseball game at Allandale yes terday afternoon between Asheville and Greenville colored teams resulted in a 15 to 8 victory for Asheville. Three Greenville pitchers were knocked out of the box. United States court will open here next Wednesday, Judge T. K. Purnell presiding. It is supposed that the First National bank cases will not be taken up until the minor cases on the aocKet have been tried. Elder C. L. Boyd, who was in charge of the work of the Seventh Day Ad- ventists in the State, died in this city last evening. His wife and daughter survive. The interment will be at Riverside. Judge Carter to Presido at a Special Torm Beginning July 11. Judge Eug. D. Garter received yes terday a commission from Governor Russell authorizing him to hold a spe cial term' of Yancey county .Superior court, for the trial of criminal cases only. The term is to open Monday, July 11, and continue until the criminal docket is disposed of. - It is understood that there are four or five capital cases on the docket for this term, so that Judge Carter's first court will be a very busy one. The case against McCurry, charged with arson, in which there was a mistrial at the last term, will probably be the first case tried. McCurry was brought to Bun combe Jail some time ago. This change of Tiour is made for the purpose of having the president of the Flower Mission at the meeting. She cannot be present in the afternoon. Archibald Herndon Williams, brothei of John A. Williams, jr., of Asheviile, died June 29 at his home on the Capt Fear river near Fayetteville. after a lingering illness. Mr. Williams was in his 45th year, and was for many years a captain on the Cape Fear steamers. His wife and two children survive. Prof. K. H. Lipscombe has received a telegram asking for 30 additional men for the colored regiment at Fort Ma con. The recruits are wanted to start for camp Monday or Tuesday at the latest. Those who wish to enlist should call on Prof. Lipscombe, T. L. Leatherwood, Dr. J. W. Bryan or Sec retary Owen of the Young Men's institute. Pensacola. Fla., a son of William F.
