OUR NEW CITIZENS. The Devil Dance as it is Observed in the Philippines. From the vYestminster Gazette. The Dv-vil dance of the r'hilippiiios. one of i he most secret of all pai?;m cer emonies, ha, it is said b:-eu witnessed by only one white man, an American, who speaks the language like a native. and was disguised as a trader from a neighboring tribe so as to gain access t. the nrvrie. The dancer, a priest. is dressed in a curious costume, wear ing a high, conical white cap. witn a red tassel on his head, a long white miu fr.m neck to ankle, and on it is embroidered representations of the goddesses of smallpox, murder and cholera. Massive silver bangles encir cle his ankles, and in his right hand In carries a spear and a bow, the strings I of which when struc-K give out a uun. booming note, while in his other hand is a sickle shaped sacrificial knife, with curious emblems engraved on the blade. The dancer begins singing in a low voice. Suddenly he starts to his feet as the music of the tomtoms be comes wilder, and with a yell and a shriek of laughter, with outstretches arms and quivering muscles he pro claims himself the deity, at the same time cutting and hacking at himself with the knife so that his blood min gles with that of the sacrifices which are offeied to him. During hU excite ment the worshippers ask questions and receive more cr 'ess oracular re plies. Sometimes, indeed, the dancer inflicts fatal wounds on himself A fat more awful phase, however, Is the dancing of the Order of the Pandietas. the sorcerers who believe that then mission is to kill Christians. Mr. Smalley continues his reminis censes of Gladstone in the September Harper's and dwells extensively on Mrs. Gladstone's strong influence over her distinguished husband, not only in domestic, but in public affairs. In the irarden at Hawarden one evening Mr. Gladstone talked long and earnestly with a visitor on a political topic in which they were mutually interested It was getting late, and Mrs. Gladstone appeared upon the scene. "You know, William." said she, 'that you have to speak tomorrow, and it is very damp: don't you think you ought to go in? "Yes," he replied: "quite time" then, with one of those expressions of humor not frequent on his face or in his voice, he said to his visitor, softly, W e will take another turn to vindicate our in dependence"; and they did. Then Mrs. Gladstone had her way. LEGAL BLANKS. '-( iial V, i.. iif J 3 -4 VAGARIES OF JOHN SHOUP. Odd Opera House He Built and Othsr Queer Thing He Did. John Shoup was what they called well off in this world's goods in fact, he was the wealthiest man in the little town In which be lived. He and Sarah bad worked bard and saved until they bad a start, and then he had bought and sold cattle and shaved notes until he was able to own a fine bouse in the country. In all this he had succeeded, but John bad paid but very little attention to his education in faot, it wns a pretty hard job for him to read, however well he might "figger. " He liked to be considered the leading man of the town and to keep up appenranoeti he had a fashion of using a great many big words of whose meaning he had very little conoeption. He was very proud of bis new house, and while it was building gravely Informed people that he was going to have a "miranda" running around the outside and a "purgatory" on top, where he could go up and view his outlying farms. He built an opera house on the north side of the square and lighted it with tal low candles. He said be did that because if he put in lamps they might "explore," and the "ordnance" would get excited and "jump right out of the windows. " The roller to the drop curtain was hollow and bad about a piDt of bullets in it, which rattled furiously whenever the curtain went up or down. Ho said that was be cause he wanted It different from other theaters. The stage was about six inches higher at the back than at the front, so he could sea the actors' feet when they danced. Performers unacquainted with bis stage had trouble to keep from sliding off into the orchestra. He had big landscapes painted on the outside of his window sbudob by an old fellow who lived down on the creek and also bad him paint his portrait head and shoulders, without any clothes on, his reason being that the styles of clothes changed, and he wanted bis true to life. His mother died, and aa he wanted to ship the body to the old home for burial he procured a metallic coffin. When hu came to pay for the coffin, be was angered at the price charged and swore that if ha ever had to have another be would " tele scope" to Burlington and have them send up one of them "italic" coffins. He had a suit before a justice of the peace with a neighbor in regard to the ownership of a calf. To save attorney 'I fees he pleaded his own case. As might be expected, the case was decided against him. He didn't seem to understand how it could happen that way and told the jus tice that, although be was doubtless a very learned man, he had made a great mistake, and if he had been trying the case he would not have decided It thai way. Chicago Times-Herald. MAN IS CONDENSED AIR. Ueblc, the Great Chemlat, la Authority For the Statement. Liebig, the greatest chemist of the oen tnry, writes : "Science has demonstrated the fact that man, the being which per forms the great wonders, is formed of oon densed air and solidified and liquid gases, that be lives upon condensed as well afl uncondensed air and that by means of thq same mysterious agent he moves or causes, to bo moved the heaviest weights with tfafl velocity of the wind. But the strangest part of the matter is that thousands ol millions of these tabernacles of condensed air are going on two legs, destroying other forms of condensed sir which tbey may need to build up their own wasted tissues or for shelter or clothing, or, on account of their egotism and fancied power, de stroying each other In pitched battles, us ing Implements which are but other forms of condensed air, he material of which they themselves are formed or composed. Chemistry supplies the clearest proof that, so far as concerns this, the ultimate and most minute composition and structure, some of which are so infinitesimal as to be beyond the comprehension of our senses, man g, to all appearances at least, com posed of material identical -with those which compose the structural being of the ox or the dog or even the lowest animal is tbe scale of creation." Solomon seems to have entertained tbe same idea; see EccleFiaste ill. 19. Boss water Is excellent as a bath to re fresh tired or Inflamed eyes, as it cools tbe lids and encourages the growth of the lashes SOIE GOWN FROM HARPER'S BAZAR The waist is very odd in design, made of heavy white lace and trimmed with straps of corded black satin, the bands of different sizes broader at the bust than at the neck or waist; the belt, however, made also of the corded satin, is quite wide. The vest, stock-collar, and large bow at the back of the collar are made of plain white mousseline de soie. The sleeves are tight-fitting, and strapped with satin ruches from the shoulder to the wrist with epaQlettes of the heavy lace to match the body of the waist, while at the wrist are ruf fles of finer lace. The hat worn with this costume is of fine pale yellow straw trimmed with long ostrich plumes, and directly in front a rosette of black satin ribbon; under the hrim, quite far back at the left side, is another satin rosette. WATCHING FOR REGINALD. Sbe Is Determined to Pursue Him to tbe Bitter End. Darby is nothing if he is pot sympa thetic, and the other day when he was waiting for the train in the Union depot and he saw an elderly woman clad in a drab veil, whito cotton flovea, fluttering white ribpons and other palpable proof of bridal attire when Darby saw her weep ing bitterly into a lace handkerchief, he approached her and said gently : " You seem to be in trouble, my good woman. Can I help you in any way?" "No; I don't know as you can," she re plied; "not unless you can find a man who says his name is Reginald St. Clair; but like enough he lied about that, as I'm thinkin he lied about ev'rything lse, hlame bis picter! He said he'd meet me here at 10 o'clock this niornin, and here it's 6 in tbe afternoon, an I ain't seen hide nor hair of 'im I He said he'd wear a red flower In his buttonhole, and here I've rushed up to half n dozen men with red flowers in their buttonholes thinkin they was him, an one came near havin me ar rested 'cause I was so sure he was Regi nald I up an kissed him!" "Who is Reginald?" "Hu'i a man I've been correspondin with. I gat his name out of a paper where he'd advertised for a correspondent with a view to matrimony. I ain't never seen him, but I've had dozens of letters breatb in devotion and declarin he couldn't wait hardly until I got my weddin things ready, and here I sent 'im $100 three days aga 'cause hu said he needed that much to fin ish furnishin our house pnd was a little abort of funds. And here I've come 200 miles, and it looks mightily to me as if Reginald St. Clair ain't a-goin to show up, an if he don't I'll track 'lm to the end of the earth an let 'im know be was fool in with the wrong person when be tried to fool mel He'll give me back that hundred dollars an what I've spent for my troosow an what it's oost me to come hero.
