0 V NEW YORK MARKET WAS DEPRESSED AEW -YORK, Sept. 2. It was a brmidable list of depressing Influ ences with which the stock market had to contend today. When trading Jwas resumed after the triple holiday ".here was an outpouring of New Hav en following the news of. today's wreck, which depressed the stock nearly 1 noints. to 90. a new low record. Another bear factor was the unexpectedly poor bank statement of Saturday. July reports of some rail road systems emphasised that Jul results had been disappointing. Both Pennsylvania and New.Ybrk Central reported increases In gross earnings but heavier operating ex penses. As the . day advanced the market received a further setback from the government cotton report, disclosing a loss In condition larger than had been expected. Another move against the .so-called anthracite trust toy the government in-the way" of a suit against Reading depressed the coalers. In the face of these influences the stock market lost relatively little ground. Prices were bid up sharply at the outset, under the lead of the coppers, which were 'benefited by the advancing tendency of the metal mar ket. London buying estimated at 20, 000 shares, helped up prices, Canadi an Pacific was marked UP four points and the Harnmanrs, Amalgamated, Chlno, Utah Copper and various other stocks a point or so. The rise was . utilized to distribute stocks, however, and a reaction quickly came. Early gains were lost and a the day's unfavorable news developed the ' tone grew heavier. New York Central was especially weak, falling back 3 points. The close found prices In most cases under Fri day's last figures. Bonds were Irregular; Total sales par value. $1,650,000. United States bonds' were unchanged on call. Total sales were 878,100 including: A. C. L. 200: C. & 0, 2,000; Lehigh Valley 2.400; L. & N." 400; Reading 39,200; S. A. Sept 2. The govern ment report making the condition of the coming cotton crop only 68.1 per cent compared with 74.8 last ea.r and 73.3 two years ago, was followed one of the most sensational advances that has ever occurred on a govern ment report day during recent year Private condition figures had prepared the trade for a bullish report, and tho market had advanced very rapiary since the middle of last month but the official figure proved even less favorable than anticipated and inspir ed a general movement. The South was credited with selling on the ad vance, supposedly against the coming but 'both trade interests and specula tors were heavy buyers, and while tha offerings were heavy enough to cause .slight reactions In the general tend ency of the market was upward. De cember contracts sold at 12.94 in the late trading, practically the 13 cents level, and 211 points or $10.66 per bale above the lo wrecord of August 14. Closing prices were 3 or 4 points off from the best, but the final tone was firm at a net gain of (7 to 71 points, as compared with the closing figures of last Friday. Local statisti cians said that on the basis of acreage the official statement that 100 per cent at this season of the . year is equivalent to 252 pounds to the acre, today's figures pointed, mathematical ly, to a crop not over 13,600,000 bales and While these figures did not seem to be at all generally accepted, the action of the market certainly sug gested a considerable scaling down of average crop views, particularly a deterioration reports have continued to come in, and the bulls claim that cotton has lost ground since the gov ernment report whs compiled. Liver pool made a firm showing over the local holidays, and the market here opened firm at an advance of t j 28 points. Prices sold 30 to 35 points net higher before the government re port was issued and the market was extremely active during the entire day. According to New York's figures the commercial crop of 1912-13, 14, 103,767 bales and the New Orleans exchange estimated the world's con sumption at 14,900,000 bales, suggest ing & big decrease in the world's mill stocks for the season. The forecast held out n) hope of any change .a woaihw condition. On the opening the tone was steady and prices were 17 to 1 points up on good cables and a dry map. Ex pectations of a bullish report on con dition at 11 o'clock also caused a gui volume of buying. Official report Indicated that next to no rain fell In the West over , the holidays. By 11 o'clock the advance was widened to 29 to 81 points. After the report the market stood 41 to 43 points up, at which level were heavy sellers to real ize profits and the market fell off about 10 points. In the afternoon the market went higher than ever, establishing new high levels for the season and finally landing 63 to 71 points over Friday's final figure. The close was steady at a net gain of 61 to 62 points. - - ------ - The market was fairly active throughout the session but no great excitement attended the advance which was the widest the market has seen in many months.
