Lord, and do not the things which I say?—Luke ».«»• CHICKENS ARE NICE IN THEIR PLACE The Times has advocated raising o. chickens, and more chickens, for years, and after several complaints have been made, the further suggestion is made that chickens are nice things to have about the place—In their place. Irate neighbors, however, know for a certainty that the right place for chickens is lr a lot. or any place except the garden of the man living next door. People are becoming Interested in gardens and flowers, and they hate to see hours of toll destroyed by a bunch of chickens that seem to pick Just tne ••wrong spot” of the neighbor’s yard or garden to do their scratching. To save friendship, the suggestion is made that cur folk raise more chick ens, ON THEIR OWN PREMISES. GARDEN CLUB COMMENDED Outstanding piece of civic work this spring was the spring flower exhibi tion last Friday. The average person was struck by the many beautiful varieties of flow ers that were artistically arrayed In the NYA hut by the ladies of the Garden Club, but the biggest idea conveyed was that we CAN have early flowers In Brevard. Flowers may not have any commer cial value growing In the front yard, but they make a house moie like a home, and the ladles of the club are to be commended for their progressive ness in making Brevard a more beau tiful place In which to Uve. CCC PAYS ITS WAY Recent Congressional appropriation of $50,000,000 with which to operate the 1,501 CCC camps throughout the United States for another year is one federal expenditure which, regardless of a man's political leaning is pretty apt to have wholehearted approval. Transylvania county in particular nas been doubly favored by the CCC boys, with many good roads In all sec tions of tha county as monuments to the work they have been doing, fire trails, fire towers, and reforestation work, In addition to the erosion con trol. In the Pisgah National Forest, again Transylvania county has come in for a lion’s share of benefits, with truck and auto trails being built, and a pro gram In the fish and game manage ment and propagation which will pay us in cash dollars for years and years to come. The CCC boys really work for their pay. get good training for themselves and do much good for the communities they touch. SQUIBS —AND— SQUAWKS Nice flowers at the Spring Exhibit last Friday—Mrs. Pat Kimzey gave me a rose to wear, and. while I was down that way, Mr. J. H. Qreen gave me a whole bunch of roses . . . an other nice bouquet came from Mrs. Frank Jenkins . . .one from Mrs. A. O. Kitchen . . . Can't eat ’em, can’t sell ’em for a lot of money, but flowers represent the nice part of life to me. Received a letter last week from Harley Wright at Canton addressed to Brevard “near Asheville.” Smart boy, Mr. Wright, and Asheville will soon be "near Brevard.” Folk who "live at home” like the Tom Williams family ought to be double happy—down there for break fast Sunday morning, and boy, oh boy, such country ham and biscuits! —S—S— Air Mall Week stamns are pretty bought the first one sold at the Bre vard postqjflce, and too, I ordered some from Sig at Rosman ... he has a nice cachet —S—S— Chap from out at Batavia, Iowa, sends in a want adv. . . must have heard that a good way to sell stuff la to advertise it la The Time*. To those who don't know how to pronounce BCUSTA—It la like this: EE-0008-TA, not B-KUST-A. All men are bom free and equal, but now and then one of them gets ever It by getting married. —8—» Maybe you never noticed It, but oc casionally even the wisest owl hoots at the wrong time. -8-8 Still another thing that could be classified as a miracle would be to find a couple of girls discussing bread re cipes instead of permanent waves. —S-S— Another fellow who has a hard time building up his list of personal friends >■ the one who thlnku that a perpetual grouch makes him look dignified. —«—8— The fatal day Is drawing near, and there will soon he a lot of Democratic aspirants In this county feeling like they ought to have had better support Such is life, one disappointment after another. —B- 8 ■ Neat grocery Just out the Arcade from The Times office. Scotty knows how to arrange things nicely, and 1 hope he sells a million dollars worth the first year. —8—8— If you have a friend living In "fur rtn” parts who has some money, write and tell such one that the mountains are beautiful, too beautiful to describe. If you have some relatives whom you don’t want, write and tell ’em how dis agreeable the weather can be here at times. These are just, suggestions. —a—s— Ask Paul Jones out at Cedar Moun tain to let you sec the "action pic ture" ye scribe recently made of him —S—8— Boy, are the people along the Ros man highway happy now. No more dust, and no more rough rock. Tar Is Just a mite sticky, but that will he over In a few days, and then we’ll all really enjoy the new road. Thinking In term.i of roads, I sug gest that the Rich Mountain drive be taken first time you have an hour to spare. The road built by the CCC boys up a scenic drive that Is beyond comparison. rorogs you will like Photos of Britain’s popular royal family, and an unhappy Austrian prince are two Interesting contrasts In our news picture section. William Bruckart in "Washington Digest” tells of importance of a recent Supreme Court decision In the Kansas City Stockyards case. It’s of moment to every citizen, he says. How does the Bible Interpret good citizenship? Rev. Harold D. Lund qulst discusses this In his Sunday school lesson text from Mark 12:13-17. In today’s Issue.
