Dove season opens on Sept. 1 It has
been announced by the State Depart
ment of Conservation and Development,
with the squirrel season next to open
on Sept. 15.
Bird hunters will have a lonirer wait
this fall before they start out with dog
and fun to get 15 quail (or less'. Open
ing of the quail season Is set :’or Dec.
15. closing on Feb. 20.
Deer season Is from Oct. 1 to Jan. 1.
and the some on bear. The lowly rabbit
Is now classed as a game animal (or
rodent) and Is not allowed to be kill
ed before Nov, 20.
Kindergarten School
Starts In September
Announcement has been made by
Mm. J. F. Zachary that her kindergar
ten group will begin work the middle
of September for the fall term
Applications should be made for en
rollment not later than the first of
September, Mrs. Zachary has stated.
Children between the ages of four and
a half and six years are accepted.
The classes are taught, as la.it year,
at Mrs. Zachary's homo, where she
may be reached by those dealring to
make application for their children, or
she may be contacted through her
residence telephone.

Art Classes To Start
Again at Oliver Home
With the closing of the summer art
school on Thursday, the fall and win
ter school will start some time In Sep
tember. the opening date to be announc
ed later by the Instructor, W. H. Oliv

Mr. Oliver states that he Is having
his recently purchased home on Rice
Road remodeled and enlarged, and will
have his studio and conduct his clnsses
there. Art classes will be operated for
children of all grades from the kinder
garten age through high school agi.
A new medium of art will be started
this fall, known as Shaw Finger Flint,
which Is designed particularly for tiny
tots. It is said to be the child’s per
fect medium for *elf_ expression, and
has proved popular and effective where

Holden Released By
Magistrates Hearing
Charge of murder against Foy Holden
of Plsgah Forest was dismissed in a
preliminary hearing here Tuesday af
ternoon by Magistrates Robert Orr and
Welch Galloway.
Charge of murder was brought
against young Holden by Mrs. Roxle
Masters, widow of Lee Masters who
was killed on Feb 12, 1927, when a
truck driven by Foy Holden struck
him. The fatal crash occurred near
Rrevard high school on Broad street.
Reverul witnesses were presented by
the state, Including Mrs. Masters, Billy
Nicholson, Harry Stroud, Charles Lee
Mull, and Henry Ball. The defense
put no witnesses on the stand.
Billy Nicholson, most Important wit
ness. stated that In his opinion the
light truck which was being driven by
Foy Holden and which struck Mr. Mas
ters was traveling at about 80 miles per
hour. Young Nicholson said he was
going north on Broad street when the
man was killed, and that Masters start
ed across the street at Intersection and
seemingly ran Into the front of the
truck.
Nlcholoon said on cross examination
that the truck swerved to the left as
If to avoid hitting the man, nnd that

25 feet or more wherj.lt struck him.

Unveiling Ceremonies
On Sunday Afternoon
Marker unvelllnsr ceremonies at the
srrave of Benjamin Davidson will be
held at the old Davidson River ceme
tery at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon.
The ceremonies will be In charge of
the D.A.R, chapter of Hendersonville,
which was Instrumental In havlnsr tho
srovemment monument erected. The
Brevard D.A.R chapter has been In
vited to attend the unvelllnir, and any
others who are Interested.
Benjamin Davidson was a Revolu
tionary soldier, and died In 1828. He
was one of the_early settlers of the
French Broad Valley, and had a larpe
prant of land In the Pisffah Forest
area. Davidson River was named for
him.

Frank Merrill of the Little River com
munity has Just bought four register
ed Red Polled cows. This gives him a
registered herd of five cows and one
hull. Mr. Merrill bought a registered
bull and heifer at the Red polled cattle
sale held In Brevard two years ago. He
has already raised and sold a registered
fine young bull calf from this mating.
Mr. Merrill Is very fond of the Red Poll
ed cattle and expects to develop a fine
registered herd here in the county.
V. B. Waldrop of the flellea section

this week. With three wagons going,
the old ensilage cutter humming, things
sounded andlooked like preparing for
the rainy days of winter for the live
stock. Just cannot carry on a success
ful livestock program without an econ
omical feed program. The trench silo
and sufficient com Is an important
link in the chain of economical food
production. Other important links in
the chain of economical feed production |
are good pastures and hay crops. When
we strengthen these links in the feed
program, our livestock production will
Increase In a most profitable manner.
Teachers Hold First
Meeting Saturday
All teachers of the county school
system are expected to attend a meet
ing at Brevard high school Saturday
morning at 10 o’clock.
Organization of the year's Transyl
vania unit of the North Carolina Edu
cation association will be perfected, and
other routine business conducted. The
Rev. J. H. Brendall will make a short

Ralph H. Ramsey. Jr., was elected
secretary-treasurer of the 18th dis
trict bar association which met at Try
on last Saturday. M. R. McCown of
Tryon was named president, and Oscar
J. Mooneyham of Rutherfordton vice

Fancy and trick skating, catching a
greased pig. and other features will
be provided at the Brevard skating
rink Saturday night.
Contests for boy and girl contestants,

skater carries a potato In a spoon,
rolls wheelbarrows, tries a hand at
skating with only the skates showing
through a sack, "figure eight," and
poise skating.
Arrangements have been made for
several hundred spectators who are
expected to attend the first event of Its

Mother of Brevard
Man Died Tuesday
Word was received here of the death
on Monday evening: at 8 o’clock of Mrs.
E. M. Sharp, 93, which occurred at her
home In Madison, following a recent
stroke and an Illness of the past two
years. Funeral services were held

burial In the church cemetery nearby.
Mrs. Sharp, whose husband died 2T
years aco, I* survived by seven sons,
the youncest of whom Is C. R. Sharp,
of Brevard, and one daughter, as fol

R. M. Sharp, of Danville, Va.; J. A.

Be Held On Thursday
w. E. Head, TT-year-Old resident of
Upper Transylvania. died at Lyday
Memorial hospital Tuesday night at
11: IB from heart trouble. Mr, Bead
had been 111 but a few days, although
he had been In poor health for more
than a year.
Funeral services will be held Thurs
day morning at 11 o'clock from Trav
elers Rest Baptist church at Bohaney,
Interment will be made In the ceme
tery there.
Mr. Head was born lit South Caro
lina. but had made'his horns In ths
Bohaney section for nearly 70 years,
where he was engaged In farming and
cattle raising.
Surviving are two sons—M. E. Hsad
of Brevard, and W. B. Head of East
Fork. The wife died a little more them
one year ago.
One sister. Mrs. Mary Klmsey of
Oakland, and two brothers—the Rev.
L. M. Lyday of Porterdale, Oa., and
J T. Lyday of Rosman, also survive.

cemetery near John Rock CCC camp
Sunday, September the 11th. It was
agreed that everybody meet and clean
o« the cemetery Thursday the »th If
weather permits and If not to meet Fri
day. The public Is Invited to attend.
Everyone wishing to help Is asked to
bring necessary tools, The cemetery
was unknown to this community until
It was discovered by the forest ranger
last year, It being probably hundreds
of years old.
