a great revival, conducted by their new

Among the guests at the Whitmire
cottage this week are George Mims and
bride, of Edgefield. S. C., W. D. Brown,
of Spartanburg, and Mr. Moore and
wife of Greensboro.
At 11 o’clock on July 30 in Upatole,
C.a., Thomas L. Walters, of Brevard,
and Miss Annie May White, were mar
ried In a ceremony performed by Rev.
J. O. Christian. Standing under a
beautiful wedding bell the charming
bride looked indeed lovely. She was at
tired in white organdie with liberty
satin and chiffon trimmings. She is a
pretty and popular young lady, the
daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James White.
The groom is a prominent business man
of Brevard and one of its most enter
prising citizens, traveling through the
south representing his business inter
ests. The wedding was followed by the
serving of delicious refreshments and
the occasion was a most delightful one.
Mr. and Mrs. Walters arrived In Bre
vard on the Friday evening train and

They expect to return to Atlanta next

Conventions held in 'the various
townships on Saturday last, were more
largely attended than has usually been
the rule In this county. The meeting
in Brevard was more like a county con
vention than a township caucus. J. A.
Forsythe, chairman of the executive
committee, called the meeting to or
der, with Welch Galloway as secretary,
and J. J. Miner, assistant. J. J. Min
er put in nomination for representa
tive Hon. R. H. Zachary. J. L. Bell
stated that In view of Mr. Zachary's
withdrawal, he announced the name of
W. A. Gash, which was received with
[murks of evident approval. The vote
resulted Gash, 72: Zachary, 13; Pat
ton. 1. For Clerk of superior court. T.
T. Loftis, present encumbent, was pre
sented by Mr. Miner, and that of W. L.
Carmichael by C. L. Osborne. The
vote resulted Loftis. 96: Carmichael,
16. J. W. McMInn was presented for
the second term ns county treasurer,
hut at the urgent solicitation of his
friends, was withdrawn, and W. H.
Duckworth received the unanimous
vote of the convention. Brevard town
ship. entitled to seven votes at the
county convention next Saturday will
vote as follows: For representative,

Thursday morning people sleeping In
the vicinity of the post office and Mil
ler's building were aroused by an ex
plosion and rattling of glass. J. A.
Miller and others who were awakened
by the shock began an Investigation.
It was found that the safe of D. S.
Hawkins, the jeweler, had been blown
open and $46 In cash and 12 or 15
watches secured by the robbers. About
$55 belonging to Mr. Miller that was
In a separate drawer was left untouch
ed. Mr. Hawkins' total loss Is about
$250. The window lights were shatter
ed and clocks and watches scattered
over the room by the force of the ex
plosion. Clocks that were hanging to
the wall stopped at 8 minutes to 3
o'clock, the exact time of the blast.
Iloth the front and back doors were
found open and tools of various kinds
were scattered about the room. An
oblong willow basket about 10 Inches
deep, which the robbers probably
brought to carry away their booty In,
was left near the safe. This is the
only clue so far, as the tools used In
the work were stolen from Mr. Tins
ley's blacksmith shop near the scene
of the robbery. All efforts are being
made to capture the burglars, but
there Is no clue whatever as to who
they were or where they wont. A re
ward of $75 Is offered for their cap- l
ture.

BAPTISTS GIVE LOVELY
RECEPTION FOR COLLEGE
A lovely reception was tendered the
Brevard College student body and
(acuity members of the Baptist de
nomination on Tuesday evening from
7:80 to 10 o’clock In the parlors of the
Baptist church, as a courtesy from the
local Baptist church. The event was
attended by around 100 of the college
group and church members.
The evening’s entertainment consist
ed of games, music and other enjoyable
features, following which refreshments
were served.
In the receiving line were the pastor
and wife, Rev. and Mrs. Yancey C.
Elliott, teachers and officers of the
Sunday school and the adult depart
ment and representatives of the senior

Mrs. Roy Long and Mrs. Brown Carr
were In charge of the decorations;
Mrs. Allen Brittain and Mrs. Harold
Norwood, refreshment committee; Al
vin Moore, music; and Mr. Elliott was
In charge of grimes.
President and Mrs. E. J. Coltrane
were special guests, In addition to the
Baptist members of the faculty and
student body.
CELEBRATE FIRST
WEDDING ANNIVERSARY
In celebration of their first wedding
anniversary' on Sunday, Mr. and Mrs.
Carroll Williams, of Falrvlew, were
honored with a musical treat at the
home of Mrs. Williams’ parents, Mr.
and Mrs. C. H. Trowbridge.
Upon previous request of Rev. and
Mrs. G. C. Brinkman, who were pres
ent for the occasion, Mrs. H. R. Bobst
entertained with a number of vocal
solos, giving expression to the beauti
ful, clear qualities of her gifted cojt
tralto voice to the enjoyment of lier
listeners. Mrs. Bobst was ably accom
panied at the piano by Miss Lilian Jen
kins.
Mrs. Bobst’s selections Included: A
group of Indian lyrics. "Temple Bells,
"Kashmiri Song," "Less Than The
Dust." and "Till I Wake:” t_wo Scotch
songs, "Hame," and "Laddie," and
"Abide With Me."
Refreshments of punch and rake
were served by Mrs. Trowbridge dur
ing the interlude.
Preceding the musical feature, a
family dinner given by Mr. and Mrs.
Trowbridge honored the anniversary
event of their daughter and son-in
law.

TO MEET THURSDAY
The three circles of the Presbyterian
church will meet Thursday afternoon
of this week at 3:30 o’clock for the
October meetings, It has been announc

Crate McCall, Jr., of Cashiers, has
been spending a few days with his
uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Tom
McKinna. while his mother has been in

had her tonsils removed. Sne was
doing very well at last reports.
Mrs. Emma Fenwick, of Brevard was
guest of her daughter. Mrs. Harkles

mother, Mrs. Eliza Barton, Sunday.
Mrs. Bertha Riddles, who has been
very sick. Is reported to be Improving.

Rosman last week but not seriously
hurt. Children take warning and be

UBS. SILVERSTEEN ENDORSED
FOR STATE D. A. R. REGENT
Mrs. J. S. Sllversteen, of Brevard, was
endorsed as state D. A. R. regent by
district No. 1 of the I). A. R. at the
annual meeting held last week In Ashe
ville.
The motion for Mrs. SUverateen’s en
dorsement for the state office was made ;
by Mrs. Frank Pender, regent of the
Ruth Davidson chapter of Asheville,
and was seconded by Mrs. J. P. Abel,
regent of the Waynesvllle chapter.
Mrs. W. H. Belk, vice president gen
eral, and other prominent officials urg
ed Mrs. SUversteen’s endorsement for
the office, which was unanimously en
dorsed by the district. The state reg- |
ent election will take place In 1940.

A social event of the senior B. Y. P.
U. of the Baptist church was an en
joyable occasion Friday evening in
the church parlors, attended by eigh
teen members of the union.
Games were played and refresh

Ralph H. Ramsey Is director of the'
senior union, and Vance Jackson is
president. In the membership drive,
which is getting started, Harry S.
Stroud and Richard Enloe are group
captains, and Rachel Hamlin and Mil
dred Henderson are assistants.
An Invitation has been extended to
all Baptist young people of the com
munity who are not members of the
senior group to join and attend the
meetings.

VISITORS IN TENNESSEE
AT UNIVERSITY OF SOUTH
Dr. and Mrs. Thomas Pearce Bailey,
who are spending the fall and winter
at Eagle's Nest Camp, will spend the
coming week-end at the University of
the South, Sewanee, Tenn.
Dr. Bailey was professor in the theo
logical department at Sewanee for
twelve years before going to Rollins
College, where he is now consulting
psychologist.
Dr. and Mrs. Bailey will return to
Rollins College, Winter Park, Fla., on
January 1st.
