CORPENING is welcoming and presenting gift certificates to MR. and MRS. CLYDE POST, of 34 Bridge street, Nyack, N. Y., the Brevard chamber of commerce’s recent guests here. Sponsored by the tourist committee they were lodged at the guest home of Mrs. A. O. Kitchen. The Posts were on a spring vacation and expressed pleasure and appreciation for their treatment here. CLUB MEETS The Rosman Garden club met Monday night at the home of Mrs. Conard McClure with Mrs. Joe Duckworth as co-hostess and 13 members were present. Mrs. Harold Hogsed gave a program on African violets after which Bob Love show ed some wonderful slides which were enjoyed by everyone. HAVE PICNIC Hubert and Floyd Callahan were honored with a birthday dinner .Sunday, served picnic style at the Pink Beds. Those present for all the good eats were: Mr. and Mrs. A. C. Callahan, of Six Mile, S. C., father and mother of Floyd and Hu bert; Mrs. Claude Mauldin and chil dren, of Six Mile; Mr. and Mrs. J. TY. Callahan, Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Cal lahan and family, of Greenville, S. C.; Mr. and Mrs. A. T. Schlock and family, of Townsville, S. C.; Mrs. Etta Leathers, Mr. and Mrs. E. H. Davis, Mr. and Mrs. Bert McLean and son, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer Mc- Xean and Mr. and Mrs. F. W. Wil son. FUNERAL HELD Funeral services for Mrs. Ada Mason were held Monday at Mace donia Baptist church. She was the wife of Harlow Mason, a native and a lifelong resident of this county. She was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. John Owen of the Glouces ter section and a member of Mace donia Baptist church. Surviving, in addition to the hus band, are three daughters, Mrs. Eugene Shelton, of Brevard; Mrs. John E. Raines, of Rosman, and Miss Marvella Mason, of the home; seven sons, Pvt. Vernon Mason with the U. S. army stationed at Fort Jackson, S. C.; Clennon and Curtis, of Rosman; Harlow, Jr., Lloyd Earl, Johnnie and Harold Douglas of the home. Also four brothers, R. V. Owen, of Lake Toxaway, route 1, Ransey and Jerry Owen, of Brevard, route 2 and Ed Owen, of Frostproof, Fla. PERSONAL ITEMS Mrs. C. E. Zachary, of Rosman,, and Mrs. A. O. Kitchen left last week for an extended trip to the west, Mexico and British Columbia. Mr. and Mrs. Perry Gravely vis ited the former’s brother, Ed (brave ly and family, at Pickens, S. C., Sun day and enjoyed a birthday dinner. Mr. and Mrs. Verlin Wood, of Brevard, were dinner guests Sun day of Mr. and Mrs. Verlin Owen. A. W. Barnett has returned to his home in Augusta, Ga., after spending several days with Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Dishman. Dewey Burton and son. Mack, and Harold Woodard were Ashe ville visitors Sunday. Mrs. M. G. Pangle visited her daughter, Mrs. Beulah Galloway, in the Middle Fork section Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. A. P. Bell, Mrs. Johnny Gillespie and sons, Mrs. B. B. White, Craig Whitmire and Mrs. R. C. Stewart, visited Mr. and Mrs. Babe Whitmire at Quebec Sunday. Roe Rice, of Kannapolis, visited Mr. and Mrs. E. M. Collins Sunday. BROAD ST. NEW SCOUT TROOP BEING ORGANIZED Presbyterian Men’s Club Is The Sponsor. Alexander Is Scoutmaster An organizational meeting of Boy Scout Troop No. 3, was held Tues day evening at the Brevard-David- son River Presbyterian church. This new troop is sponsored by the Men’s club of the church, with Bill Alexander serving as scout master. Dick Gustafson is the assistant scoutmaster, and the scout commit tee of the church is composed of the following: Duncan Hunter, chairman; L. C. Poor, property; Joe Blackwell, treasurer; Mack Feaster and Dick Gustafson, advancement; James Hawkins and Lewis Alexan der, camping; Bruce Brown, pub licity; Alfred Galloway and Arthur Lindley, outdoors; and Dick Rob erts, secretary. All boys interested in joining the new troop are asked to contact the scoutmaster or any member of the committee. School Band Is Q u a r tered At Toxaway Lodge By MRS. LEE NORTON OAKLAND — A 35-piece high school band from Columbia, S. C., made Oakland their headquarters Monday and Tuesday nights this week at Mt. Toxaway Lodge and Reid’s Ranch. They gave perform ances at Glenville high school and at Western Carolina Teachers col lege. John W. Cole, of Mt. Toxaway Lodge, was in Asheville last week on business. Illness hindered this writer from gathering news last week, and we hope it was not missed. Persons interested in the upkeep of Reid’s cemetery are asked to contact Mrs. I. S. Sanders. A clean ing was held last Saturday with only two workers showing up. Much more is needed if respect is shown to the memory of those bur ied there. Rev. Hulon Arms conducted a fine service Sunday morning and a baptizing in the river in the after noon. The latter was very impres sive, especially since it was the first baptismal service Mr. Arms had ever performed. Ray Sanders spent several days last week here with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. I. S. Sanders. He was joined by his Avife and sister and family and the group returned to West Asheville Sunday. Mrs. Walter McNeely and son, Lewis, were shopping in Brevard last week. They were accompanied by Mrs. Beulah McNeely. Mr. and Mrs. W. F. McCall were in Brevard last week. Mr. and Mrs. Frank Revis were recent visitors of the former’s un cle, Lon Revis. Miss Myrtle Cash and mother, Mrs. L. E. Cash, were in Asheville last week when the latter consult ed a specialist. Gloucester News Reported Today By MRS. R. M. OWEN Rev. Gene Moore, the pastor, preached at Macedonia Sunday and a large crowd was present. Mr. and Mrs. Truitt King, of Pelzer, S. C., visited Mrs. King’s parents, Mr. and Mrs. Robbie Owen Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Ralph Smith, of Brevard, visited Mr. and Mrs. Rus sell Mason Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Talmadge Phillips and daughter and Mr. and Mrs. El lis Galloway and son, of Brevard, visited with relatives here Sunday. Mr. and Mrs. Walter Phillips and family, of Franklin, was visiting here Sunday. All the friends and relatives of Mrs. Harlow Mason were sorry to hear of her death Saturday night.
