PAGE TWO THE TRANSYLVANIA TIMES, BREVARD, NORTH CAROLINA THURSDAY, MAY 21, 1953 84 Seniors Will Receive Diplomas At Brevard EXERCISES WILL BE HELD IN MAY AT SCHOOL HERE Brief Sketches Of Each Mem ber Of Graduating Class Is Given A total of 84 students will grad uate next Tuesday night, May 26, at Brevard high school. This is one of the largest senior classes in the history of Brevard high school and The Times is this week carrying brief sketches of each senior. Members of the staff of the Broadcaster, school paper, assisted in the preparation of these biographies. They follow: SAMUEL HUGH ALLISON Here is the singing troubadour of Brevard high. Since he entered high school, he has been in the Glee club, Latin club, junior-senior ban quet program, FFA, FFA string band, and the library staff. Hugh has greatly excelled in music. WILLIAM ALLEN ARNETTE Better known as “Willie Hau- pin,” he has been on the Square Dance team, basketball, baseball and football and golf teams. He has been football manager, escort of Huddle Queen attendant, escort of Huddle Queen, and senior su perlative. Also he has been a mem ber of the Monogram club and Brevardier staff. MATTIE FRANCES ASHE Mattie is known by her cheerful smile and pleasing personality. She has been in the FHA club, 4-H club, Square Dance club, and Latin club. JOYCE ANN ASHWORTH Here is one of the few all-round people at BHS. She is a member of the FHA, 4-H, Camera, Dra matics, Glee club. She has been a waitress at the junior-senior ban quet, marshal, and on the junior- senior program. CHARLES LOGAN AYERS “Tide” is quite an FFA boy. He has been a member for four years, vice president, on the track team, delegate to state FFA convention, beef judging team and in the Glee club and junior-senior program. PEGGY JEAN ARNETTE Peggy is an outstanding and pop ular girl at BHS. Her high school career seems to be filled with square dancing in that she has been on the team for four years and also on the Echo Inn Clogging team. Clubs of which she is a mem ber are Glee and Booster. EULA ARMINTA BAYNARD Since Eula has been famous for her pranks and wise cracks, both to teachers and students, she was a senior superlative. RALPH DOUGLAS BENSON Doug is one of Biltmore Dairies’ cowboys who rides the range down at Pisgah Forest. Doug is a mem ber of several clubs and has been n the basketball team. KENNETH DEVAUGHN BYRD Ken, the president of our student body, is one of the best liked guys in BHS. He is an active member of the Student Council, Parliamen tary Procedure team, FFA, annual staff co-sports editor, and he plays baseball and tennis. elected captain of the All-Western Carolina team. He was one of the highest scoring basketball players and is a heavy batter on the base ball team. JAMES RICHARD BRYSON Dick is another real FFA man. He has been a member for four yeras and has been a reporter for the FFA. Besides his agricultural activities, he has been a bus driver and a member of the annual staff. CHINERY BURNS Her friendly smile and cheerful ways are the foundation of her sweet personality. She has been in the FHA, Book World, 4-H club, and Latin club. RANDALL MERRILL BRYSON Better known as “Bye Bye” Bry son, Randall has been one of the most outstanding athletes at Bre vard high. As co-captain, he helped lead the football team to the con ference championship. He played in the Optimist Bowl, and was BILLIE JEAN CANSLER Most dramatic” — that’s Billie. Billie has been a valuable asset to the band for eight years. She is and has been on the debating team for two years. Last year she served as chief usher at the junior play. DORIS LEE CAUBLE Doris came back to BHS this year from North Augusta high school where she was a member of the glee club and Square Dance club. Since, she has been a mem ber of the Future Teachers club, FHA, Camera and 4-H clubs here in Brevard. JOYCE CLYDE CLARK Joyce, better known as “Joy,” has certainly brought joy to all who have known her. She has been in the FHA club for four years, in the 4-H club, and in the Glee club. She served on the annual staff this year. LUTHER LOUIS COCHRAN Louis is known for his ability to get along in French class. He has driven a bus for the last two years. After school he plans to work. His determination should be a big asset to him. has been in the band for two years. Last year he was elected president of the Latin club and with Mrs. Burrowes’ help, did a very good job of managing it and planning the successful dance. JOHN EDWARD COX John Edward has been on the debating team for two years, and is the proud holder of the BHS de bating medal, WOW world history medal, and the American History medal. John is an active member of the Beta club, Latin club, and Glee club. In ’52 and ’53 he attend ed the Beta convention where he served as a marshall. After grad uation he plans to attend N. C. State and major in architecture. CHARLES A. COGGINS Flyboy” Coggins has been very active in FFA. Her plans after grad uation are incomplete. FRANCES MARIE DEAN Frances has been very active as library assistant, secretary of Fu ture Teachers club, and Glee club. Frances was elected “most depend able” and she certainly lives up to it. Her plans after graduation are uncertain, but we wish her success in anything she does. ROBERT WOODWARD DEBORD Bobby can be recognized by his curly hair. He has been a member of the Science, Camera, Audubon, Latin, Hobby and Glee clubs. He was also on the tennis team and a member of the band. JOHN LATIMER DELK John came to us from Bessemer City. He is the senior class presi dent and sports editor of the Broadcaster. He played football, basketball and baseball. He has been a member of the Glee, Latin, Audubon and Journalism clubs. ROY EDWARDS Roy was a member of the Hobby, Science, and Camera clubs at BHS. He has the determination to suc ceed in whatever he does. ANNE FOSTER Anne has excelled in everything, she has entered. She has been a member of the student council and annual staff for three years, is sen ior class treasurer, an officer of the- Beta club, chief marshall of ’52, DAR citizen of ’53, and a senior class superlative. KATHLEEN GAINES Kathleen’s bright smile and friendliness is known by all. She has been a member of the Student Council, Beta club. Broadcaster- staff and Glee club for three years, is president of the Future Teachers, club, and is a superlative of ’53. JOANN GALLOWAY Friendliness and dependability are both combined in Joann. She' has been a member of the Glee- club for three years, is vice presi- ^dent of the Beta club, a member of the Broadcaster staff and Latin club, is vice president of the senior class, and a senior superlative. RALPH DUCKWORTH Ralph was a member of the Science club and Latin club during his high school career. He wants to : an automotive engineer. JIMMY EDENS Jimmy is a boy that everyone likes. He has been a member of the Monogram club for four years, and the library and annual staff for two years. JEAN EMERY She has been a member of the Latin club and FHA for three years, and on the library staff for two years. ANNE GARREN Anne is the moneymaker of the- senior class. She is a four-year member of the 4-H club, the school pianist ’53, a member of the Beta club, Latin club, FHA, library staff. Broadcaster staff, vice president of the 4-H, and senior class secretary,. CRAIG GARREN Craig always seems to have a friendly smile for everyone. He has been a member of the Glee club for four years, a Latin and Square Dance club member, and was on the Student Council. SHIRLEY GAITHER Why Shirley has been in the beauty court for two years can be seen at first glance.
