VON GOLDBERG RITES ARE HELD Mother Of Mrs. Eileen Era kine Passes After Linger ing Illness |p Funeral services for Mrs. Flor w cnee Good Von Goldberg were con ducted at 11 a. m. Saturday morn ing in St. Philip’s Episcopal church of Brevard. Rev. Charles McCrav ern, of Tryon, officiated. Mrs. Von Goldberg died Thurs day, August 11th, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Eileen Erskine, in Brevard. She had been in declin ing health for sometime. Mrs. Von Goldberg was a native of Philadelphia, Pa., the daughter of General and Mrs. J. Lewis Good. She was married to the late Harold G. Von Goldberg, promin ent surgeon of Philadelphia. Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Eileen Erskine, of Brevard, and Mrs. John Preston, of Tryon, and three grandsons, Michael, David and Philip Preston. Burial was in the Laurel Hill cemetery in Philadelphia. Miss Zachary Is Awarded Master’s Degree From FSU Miss Lillian B. Zachary, of Bre vard, has received her master’s de gree from Florida State universi ty at Tallahassee, Fla. She is the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. J. F. Zachary. Miss Zachary was one of more than 300 graduates who received diplomas Saturday, August 13th, in the Westcott auditorium on the campus. The conferral of degrees came at the completion of the uni versity’s eight-week summer ses sion. The commencement speaker was Justice Tom Sebring of the Florida supreme court. (Times Staff Photo) Money Raised By MYF Groups Goes In S c h o larships The Blue Ridge Sub-District of the Methodist Youth Fellowship, in which Transylvania county church es are included, is now engaged in an extensive scholarship program to aid boys and girls desiring to go to college. At the most recent meeting held at East Flat Rock Methodist church, the results of the “Harvest Program” for the scholarships was revealed. Three months earlier 13 ten-dol lar bills were given to the individ ual churches of the sub-district. From the original $130 the result turned in at the last meeting amounted to $598.36. The largest amount made came from the Oak Grove Methodist church in North Brevard. From their original $10 the Oak Grove MYF made $120.00. Several students will receive $100 scholarships this fall. The pledge service at the last tub-district meeting was conducted by the Balfour Methodist church of which Rev. James Elliott is the pastor. Cox, pastor of the Grace Baptist church, officiated Burial was in the Dunn’s Creel cemetery. Survivors include the parents and four brothers and sisters. Transylvania’s 4-H club delegates returned home Saturday from a very inspiring and wonderful weelc at Swannanoa 4-H camp, Swannai noa. This was the first 4-H leader ship conference to be held for the 15 western counties. Those attend ing from Transylvania county were: Villa Holland, Barbara Lyda, Floyd McCall and Charles Taylor. The conference was planned to provide the club members a big opportunity to secure a broader vision of the many opportunities in 4-H club work and to secure training that will enable 4-H’ers to be more ef fective leaders in their county, club and community 4-H club activities. Mr. Harrill, state 4-H club leader who for more than 30 years has directed his efforts toward provid ing greater opportunities for 4-H club members, inspired the club members with his philosophy that opportunities are as great as one’s imagination and willingness to put that imagination into action. In ad dition to the inspirational and spiri tual training, the club members had classes in leadership, recreation, crafts, photography, record keep ing, puppetry, nature, spatter painting, corsage making and oth er interesting classes. The club members learned that we must first understand ourselves to be able to understand others and lead them in the accepted direction. The club members were accom panied to camp by the writer. Animal disease specialists re port that during the past fiscal year, sheep scabies was diagnosed in around 400 flocks, including 40, 000 sheep in 21 states. Banther Funeral services for Dewey C Banther, 56, of Lake Toxaway, were held last Saturday afternoon at the North Toxaway Baptist church. Rev. Craig Dodson, Rev. R. Moody and Rev. S. B. McCall offi ciated and burial was in the Lake Toxaway Baptist church cemetery. Mr. Banther died at the home of Mrs. Dock Banther in the Toxaway section last Thursday night. Survivors include the following: five brothers, Carl Banther, Lake Toxaway; Taylor Banther, Rosman; A. H. Banther, Penrose; Eulus Ban ther, Hendersonville, and Pierson Banther, Brevard; and one sister, Mrs. Prudence Earley, of Florida. Nephews were pallbearers at the service on Saturday and niecest served as flower girls. Mr. Banther was a native of Tran sylvania county and was a member of the North Toxaway Baptist church. Osborne - Simpson funeral home was in charge of arrangements.
