ERWIN MISS UNA EDWARDS Associate Editors BAPTIST CHURCH NOTES- Account of so many of our peo ple going to the several memorial day services held last Sunday our attendance at the Sunday school fell below the four hundred mark. As the pastor, Rev. R. C. Smith was away attending the Southern Baptist convention at Houston, Tex., there was no preaching" service last Sunday, but many of the Baptist people attended the services at the Methodist church. A.t the close of the Sunday School Miss Rosa Lee Anderson, of limestone College, sang a beautiful solo. Sunday evening there was a song service. The choir and people of the Methodist church having been invited and joined in the service. Many of j the old hymns were sung and at this time it was suggested that on some future date the choirs and members of the other churches be invited to take part in "a service. "An Evening With the Old Hymns." It was sug gested that a .short sketch of the com posers be given stating the event or incident that inspired the writing of the hymn, then having the hymn sung. Some as solos, duets, quartets or as a chorus. The matter was left with the directors of the Baptist and Methodist choirs. M. T. Greene and 'C. D. Hughes, respectively. Mr. D. C. Whitaker had charge of the prayer service last week and will conduct the meeting this week as the pastor is not expected to arrive un til Thursday. Sunday evening the following telegram was read to the church: Houston, Texas, May 15, 1926. Have had great convention. Came with some apprehensions. Returning with thanksgiving and rejoicings. General unanimity everywhere. Your pastor sends love and greetings. Let every one help to make today's worship helpful. The new looms for weaving Terry towels have, begun to arrive and a number of men are in clear ing out the old looms and placing the new ones. Work on the Bleech ery is progressing and the new fin ishing plant will soon be ready for use. Mr. Sam Haynes, who for several years has been in charge of the Riv erview Store on Riverview street has resigned and moved his family to Forest City. Mr. White Jolley has succeeded Mr. Haynes at the River view Store." The Lake View Roller Mills has re cently spent several thousand dol lars in adding equipment to the plant. They have an ad in this is sue. Cupid seems to be wide awake and on the job here. A week ago Mr. J. B. Nanney claimed for his bride Miss Lucy Greene. The bride is the attractive daughter of Mr. and Mrs. D. W. Greene. The groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Nanney. On Monday afternoon of last week Mr. Paul Packard and .Miss Vergie Padgett were married- at Gaffney. Miss Padgett is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. G. C. Padgett and the groom is the son of Mr. and Mrs. C. W. Packard and the nephew of the late W. L. Packard, who for sev eral years was the beloved super intendent of Cliffside Mills. W2 join the many friends of both these young couples in wishing for them joy and prosperity. The annual meeting of the stock holders of Cliffside Mills was held here on Wednesday of last week. The Woman's Missionary Society of the. Methodist church, delight fully entertained the teachers of the Cliffside schools at the Cliffside Ho tel on last Saturday evening, May 15. The hotel was beautifully decor ated with roses and other cut flow ers. Many old games were played and enjoyed. Mr. John G. Roach received the prize for the Bean Quiz contest* and Mr. R. C. Hinkle won the prize for the doll dressing contest Splendid music was fur nished by Miss Beulah Heafner. Mrs. R. C. Hinkle, chairman of the re freshments committee, served the guests with fruit salad, iced tea and sandwiches. Miss Mabel Bridges , entertained Tuesday afternoon honoring her mother, Mrs. Boyce Bridges, on her birthday. After the guests had as sembled a word contest was held with Mrs. Chas. McCurry winning the prize. Later an advertisement con test was enjoyed with Mrs. C. M. Collins the winner. Much merriment was created when each guest told of the funniest incident in their lives. Just before the refreshments were served, the guests were invited to inspect the gifts. Miss Bridges, assisted by Misses Mabel Scruggs and Ollie Tate, serv ed a delicious ice course.
