The investigation of the manage ment of the Central Hospital for the Insane terminated Thursday with an admission by counsel for the prosecu tion of the charges against Supt. Al bert Anderson and the management of the institution, that they have failed to make out a case. Our Fatherless Ones Says: Dairy man Foster tells us that he is making about 50 pounds of butter at a churn ing, and gives the children butter twice a day and milk three times a dav. He is making the cows and boys "deliver the goods." We say boys because as much depends upon the boys as the cows. Perhaps the first woman in North Carolina to colunteer for service as a nurse in Mexico is Mrs. A. B. Breece of Fayetteville, a bride of six weeks, whose husband is a member of Com pany F, Second regiment, North Caro lina National Guard. Mrs. Breece is a professional nurse. Mr. Breece is a candidate for the Legislature in Cumberland, in a second Democratic primary to be held July 1, but he an nounces that wherever his company goes he will go. At the meeting of the North Caro lina Bankers' Association in Ashe ville W. S. Blakeny of Monroe was elected president; W. B. Drake of Raleigh, 1st vice president; W. A. Hunt of Henderson was re-elected secretary-treasurer. En route from Mount Holly to their home in Lenoir, the automobile of Dr. Lawrence Coffey turned com pletely over just outside Hickory and pinned his 4-year-old son underneath the machine. The child was serious ly injured and others in the machine slightly injured. Sergeant W. L. Elliott of the Con cord military company was to have been married Wednesday of last week. When the call came for troops the wedding day was moved up and the marriage took place Monday even ing. The first North Carolinian to sacri- fice his life during the present crisis in Mexico was an Asheville negro, Charlie Williams, member of troop A, of the 10th cavalry, May 24, in a skirmish with Mexican bandits who was killed according to information received at Asheville Thursday. Wil liams was a son of Marshall Williams, a well known and respected negro of Asheville and joined the army in 1914. A telegram was received by the father of the dead trooper from his commanding officer, Capt. G. P. Pritchard, a relative of Judge J. C. Pritchard, of Asheville. The body will be carried to Asheville and given a military funeral. Representative Doughton is trying to help out some Alexander county farmers whose crops were destroyed early this month. He is procuring seed, and will have sent to the dam aged community a farm demonstrator About 25 farmers near Taylorsville lost all of their growing crops. Cabarrus county closed its anti-typhoid campaign Saturday of last week with near 5,600 having taken the pre ventive treatment. It is estimated that this number is about 16 per cent of the county's population and that the average per capita cost of the treatment was 7 1-2 cents. Dr. A. C. Bulla, the physician in charge of the work, says he is well pleased with the results of the campaign and the splen did co-operation he received while in the county. ' F. A. Macon, Jr., of Henderson, is the only Tar Heel in the class of 1917 at West Point. McNAIR, Laurinburg, N. C. Mr. Leonard Stone, about 65 years old, was fatally injured at Mr. R. R. Barnes' sawmill at Barnesville Tues day morning of last week about 11 o'clock when a large flywheel flew to pieces as a result of an engine run ning away when the governor-belt broke. A piece of the wheel struck Mr. Stone on the right side of his head, crushing his skull. Death re sulted about 8 o'clock that night. Pieces of the flywheel were scattered with terrific force, some going through the roof. Elizabeth City has a new daily newspaper, "The Daily Advance." It entered the field a month ago, the smallest newspaper in the State, but has grown steadily in size. NOTICE OF SALE OF LAND.
