DIET SHOWN WITH RAT EXJIIIIT A striking oahlblUoa of J talus of mUk la tha diet baa beea prepared by tha Dairy DfvWsa of tha United Stales Department of Agrlrulors for sa la educational milk ssapsis. Tha exhibit consists of two stuffed sad mectd rata, on a Urgs-bsbed healthy spactmea, tha oher aa under siied weskllng with skla clinging to iU poorly developed bones. Tha Illustration tesnperee aa ade quate diet containing all tha food as m filial with aa Inadequate, pearly chosen diet, tacking some af tha faod eeer, tlals. Tha Urge, well-devel- aoed halihv rat had Its eril lii 'supplemented with milk, and tha ad Finishing, f vantage accruing is shown by the,1 well-developed tissues, muscles, and j bones, the smooth hair, the bright eyes, and the healhy color of the liv ing rat. The protein of milk is ca- plc of building muscular tissue. ' The mineral of the milk, eapecially lime, builds stronjr bones, and the food accessories (vitamines) of the I milk insure growth and health. The small rat was deprived of milk and other adequate sources of these necessary food constituents, hence the weak, gelatinous bones, thin muscies, tack or growtn, ana con-J slant loss in weight and size. Both rats had wheat biscuits, but only one had milk with the biscuits. These rata were chosen from two cages, each containing six rata. On March 24 each group weighed 485 grams. All rata were young and the same age. On May 4 both groups were again geighed. The six rata receiving milk had gsined 642.5 grsms. The others showed a lam af 17.1 grama each, or 102.7 grama far the lot of sit. This is not considered a scientific peri merit, but a simple exhibit to show tha effects of an inadequate diet, aa proved by experiments! re- sesreh.
