Superintendent of Schools, Mr. John A. Martin, Supt of Public Welfare, visited a schol community and found only 73 children in school. - Upon investigation he found 100 names on the schoc-L census. He knew jthere were morechildren in the community . uuuuid be in school and decided ook for them. n an island in the district he overed 15 families that did not Know there wag a compulsory school attendance law and the 40 children belonging to these families were not in school. 183 children were in the school at the end of Mr. Martin's three days investigation and the next week when he returned for a visit he found 217 had been enrolled. The school officials had to hustle to find teachers to take care of the unexpect ed 144. More than 75 per cent of the child ren walk to school and many of them come as far as S miles. Last year the building was burned and now the teachers are using small rooms in four seperate buildings an old barber shop, the hall over a drug store and rooms over the Masonic Temple.
