Police officer Seth Hughes said he smelt liquor but iiiat the defend ant did not seem t be drunk. Styron admitted having taken a drink but said he was not drunk and could drive all right. Police officer Iredell Salter, restaurant keeiier Nick Dora balis and Chief of Police Willis tes tified in behalf of Styron stating that when they saw ho did not seem to be drunk. The judgement of the court was that Mr. Styron was guilty. He was let off with the costs and is not to drive a car for sixty days from July 1. William Ward, a middle aged Negro man, was tried on the charge of having stolen the pocket book of Mrs. Charles Ortlieb of Morehead City. Mrs. Ortlieb testified that when she got out of her car she dropped the pocket book on the run ning board or the ground, that she saw Ward at the car and saw him stoop down and pick up something. She was corrobrated in her statement by J. W. Hill. Chief of Police Willis testified that lie helped search Ward and found a bill fold and $3.85 in his pocket. He said the money smelled like talcum powder. At the conclu sion of the evidence Mr. Wheatly moved for a non suit which was de nied by the court. He then gave no tice of an appeal to Superior Court and Ward was put under a bond of $100. Roy Willis, a young white man from the Smyrna neighborhood sub mitted to a charge of having set fire to woods which damaged 3000 acres of forests. District Warden Hooker and Deputy Warden Clyde Mason testified as to the damage done. Thure was some evidence that the defendant is weak minded. He tes tified that he threw a lighted cigar ette down and that the tire started and got away from Mm. The judg ment of the court wa that the de fendant pay a fine of $15 and costs and that he is to swve 30 days in jail unless he shows good behavior for the next six months. James Keyes a Negro truck driv er of Morehead City was convicted of the charge of simple assault and fined $5 and cost. The accusation against him was that he assaulted Bertie Murrill a Beaufort woman. It seems that a party of colored people had been joy riding to Playview Beach and Morehead City and that after some dispute Keyes either hit the woman or threatened to do so. The court did not seem to think the affair a very serious matter and let the defendant off with a small line and costs. i A. A. Garner, Disposing of mort gaged property.
