Thursday, May 20, 1937 THE BEAUFORT NEWh BEAUFORT, N. C. PAGE THREE SCHOOL CLOSES AT HARKERS ISLAND "Rev. Mr. Fred Seeley Of Beaufort Manned Our Pulpit By JIMMIE GUTHRIE Harkers Island's High School ex Mav 9th with the Rev. Mr. Stephens of Morehead City preaching the Baccalaureate sermon, who, presented to the more than 300 anxious listeners an extraordinary address. As usual, and probably a little more than usual our School develop ed into a real success, our able and efficient superintendent, our princi pal and his teachers brought about a very good school. Havini? as I do a very great idea that all the roving criminals sought aftt: by the American police does not the damage t osociety as a whole, as one delinquent child from school. These boys and litis girls who do not go to school are reared in such a manner that thru himself more criminals are at large than can bo made by a thousand John Dillingers. I hope the State comvells them to attend regular. Today the Rev. Mr. Fred R. Seley of Beaufort manned our pulpit of the M. E. Church, South, in placing before his many hearers the inten tion of his visit hera on what is com monly known as "Layman's Day." This was for the purpose, as he out lined, of relL-ving the regular preach- i ers, that is to this extent, that we, the members of all churches, as well as the laymen, have a responsibility, that is we should "Advertise" our God and our Church, and not leave it all for the the preacher, who some timpa. mav have filled with too much chicken or .otherwise, and leave offsomething that ought to be en forced. In general we, the people of the Island, who now are beginning to fee! that Sou'wester, and hear the little waves as they break and wash up high on the shore, are doing just fine, and have greater expectations to do finer, little later on as the time pass es. The graduation of the Senior class was attended by, nr.d presided ow-r by Mr. Luther Hamilton of Morehead City, ami Mr. J. G. Allen, Superin tendent of fc-.h'iols. Mr. Hamilt'n spoke at large upn,i Ideals such w God alone would ac quire at the linds of those boys and girls who have started out into this big and sinful world to make a home, or just a house for themselves. Which would you prefer a home or a house? He also said in lengeth, thr.t it is useless for man now, in 1 'J 3 7 to live within the confines of a "Wall," being true that China tried that for many centuries, only to wane and come to be an almost dilapidated country. Mr. Allen, the Superintendent, spoke high of the School here, and heavily invited increased attendant. and that they would continue to li more and more. We thank you distinguished gen tlemen, come again.
