Leslie Davis, Attorney, 4Uul8 Says Farm Youth Hold Future Of The Nation RALEIGH, June 16 The welfare of the Nation largely is depndent upon the farm families of the South. This keynote was struck at the Older ,. Youth conference held at State College last week and attend ed by 101 North Carolina farm boys and girls from Perquimans County in the east to Haywood in the west. The family as an institution is the bulwark of the Nation, but in the big cities the family is breaking down, said Dr. O. E. Baker, of the U. S. Department of Agriculture. While th birth rate is declining seriously elsewhere, it still exceeds the death rate on southern farms, and in 100 years, he said, most of the nation's population will have de scended from southern stock. "You young people hold in your hands the destiny of the Nation," he declared, "and have within your power the ability to build up a coun try that will endure through the ages." Col. J. W. Harrelson, administra tive dean of the college, also stated that economic changes are bringing agricultural districts to the front,, while great cities built largely on wealth produced elsewhere have al ready seen their heydey. Dean I. O. Schaub, director of the State College extension service, pointed out that one of the major problems of agriculture is how young people who wish to start farming can secure land of their own. Few have the capital required to buy and equip a farm of any size. The purpose of the conference, said L. R. Harrill, 4-H club leader at the college who had charge of the conference, is "to give informa tion, training, and inspiration which will help young men and women select intelligently the vocations for which they are best fitted." Besides the addresses and recrea tion, the boys and girls were given advanced instruction in agriculture and rural homemaking. Need Storage Plants For Poultry Products RALEIGH, June 16 Providing two or three centrally located pack ing and storage plants would work to the advantage of both buyers and sellers of poultry,, believes T. T. Brown, extension poultryman at State College. At present large grocery compan ies and packers are forced to buy the bulk of their poultry meat and eggs outside North Carolina because their demands cannot be satisfied within the State. Yet, declares Brown, North Caro lina poultry growers ship large num- Save Money Ride Trains REDUCED FARES For Train Travel One and One-Half Cents Per Mile VIA Norfolk-Southern Railroad BETWEEN ALL STATIONS Except Electric Division Stopovers allowed in Final Limit BAGGAGE CHECKED Half fares for children under twelve years of age. This discrepancy b brought a bout because buyer and seller find it difficult to get together. Consequent ly, the buyer will continue to make his purchases outside the state, and seller will continue to ship his poul try north. When there is such a huge poten tial market right here in North Carolina for poultry and eggs, some plan should be worked out so that local products could be bought by home companies and packers, Brown adds. One large packing company made a survey of poultry resources in North Carolina a few years ago, but decided, at the time-, there would be an insufficient amount of poul try and eggs to justify the erection of a packing and storage plant. However, declares Brown, poultry production has expanded to the ex tent that two or three of these plants could be employed to good advantage at present. Cooperation would be essential to the success of these plants, the poul tryman points out. Before they could be set up, officials would have to be reasonably sure that there would be enough offerings fiom growers to keep the establish ments going. BASE BALL By W. W. When the home boys came to bat, the local vocal chords again registered high C as the diamond's perimeter was twice traversed, W. Nelson hitting for two losses and Brown again for one. With the New Bernians in the final frams and the game so apparently sewed up, the sea side boys seemed to relax. A walk and three errors filled the bases.
