Last April the Interstate Com merce Commission following three hearings in the matter granted t.ne Norfolk Southern permission to a bandon operation over the trackage within a period of 90 days.. The 90 Havs pxnired on Julv 6. according to Director C. R. Wheatly. Anticipating the forming of the corporation, the tariffs over the carrier were re-in stated on June 29, he stated. Arrangements have been made with the Atlantic and North Caro lina to operate trains over the re cently purchased trackage, it was stated. The service will be the same as it has been in the past In Raleigh last night Stanley win- borne, Utilities Commissioner said that he was of the opinion the Beau fort and Morehead City Kaiiroaa Company's 'lease' of the 3-17 miles of line between Beaufort and Mor head City from the Norfolk Soutn- ern carried with it the I. C. C.'s Iran chise permitting operation. Despite the severence of connections with the interstae Norfolk-Southern, Com missioner Winborne, is of the opin ion the short sector will remain un der the supervision of the ICC by virtue of the fact that it will handle freight going to and from other states. From Norfolk came the report that the matter would be laid before the Receivership Court there for ap proval of the lease, and that the case would probably come before Federal Court L. B. Way, who is not holdirnr court this week because of minor injuries. In such a case it was stated, resumption ol operation on the rail sector awaitB only the sanction of the receivership court. Here in Beaufort it was not stated what proposed changes were planned for the operating personnel oi tne IVl miv trackage FISHING AND OUTDOORS (Continued from page one) so long ago a flock of wild turkeys came into Beaufort and were seen perched on the housetops in the northern part of town. During the winter morons h w flocks of ducks or even geese swim inter months it is not unsual to see ming around in the waters of the harbor. It all proves that Cs.vterel has bee.; and still is, a spojt?r:. :: paradi.se. A FIVE AND a half pound bij mouth blr.c-k bass is ? gouii sized fish. Eut that is what the en;' taken by Overton Price in a tributary oi' South River in Mrs. Yeatman's Open Grounds weighed a few days ago, landed with rod and reel the big fresh water bass gave Price plenty of action before it was brought to the landing net. It is one of the largest of the species taken in that section in some time and might even be a record breaker. The foregoing ia written only with the thought in of convincing anglers that her in Car teret we have a variety of game fish ing.. not only in our sound and ocean waters but in our fresh water it reams. A READER OF The Beaufort News, who seemed to know what he was talking about dropped by and said that, the editorial we published about dogs biting children, contain ed some sentences in which he did not agree. A vaccinated dog can be a rabies carrier, he said, and em inent men of science have proven this during recent years. However a vaccinated dog in all probabilities is much safer than one which has not been given treatment, he agreed. The main thought we had when the editor ial was written was to impress owners to keep their dogs from running at large during the summer season. There should be a law phohibiting owners to allow their dogs to run at large. Here in Beaufort the situa tion is bad. Such a situation should not be tolerated. SOMETHING We sent to The News and Observer, but overlooked writing up for The Beaufort News was the story about the 9-foot alli gator killed out in the Open Grounds recently by Frank King, Harry -lason and Jimmie Grazier, employ ees of Miss Yeatman, who owns the vast acreage out there. They killed the leptile with an axe and that in itself is somewhat of a feat-. even if the gator had been only a few feet in length. LOCAL GUIDES are disturbed. Al though the fishing thi3 year has been up to par, it seems that comparativc a few anglers from up-state have been up to par, it seems that compar atively a few anglers from up-state have been to the Carteret coast fish ing. That is not because the section has not been given proper publicity, because stories have frequently been published in up-state papers about i.ts fishing in adjacent waters this year. READING THE stories in a con temporary newspaper about a catch of channel bass made in thes uif on Atlantic Beach a few days ago gave many of the seasoned surf casters hereabouts a good laugh. Judging from the stories appearing in another Carteret county newspa per these surf-landed copper colored beauties were the first of the season. But such is not the case. Any num ber of channel bass have been land ed in the surf along Bogue Island since late Spring, and down on Core banks the channel bass casting this year has been above par.
