Jacob Miller, owner of the irm started here on a small scale in September 1936, but already he has increased the size ot his original quarters and to day his store is one of the best in any Eastern Carolina town. Jacob Miller became a part ot Beaufort immediately upon bis ar rival in town to enter the furniture business. He made friends fast and today he is known from one end of Carteret to the other for the fair and square dealings he has with cus tomers. Here in Beaufort he takes a part in the civic life of the town and is one of the most popular mem bers of the local Rotary Club. He is also active in the American Leg ion, having accepted the post ot fi nance Officer for the coming year. His career has been interesting. He was born in Poland in 1893. At the age of I t he came to America. On this cruise to his adapted coun try young Jake Miller was aboard the late' S. S. Lusitania, which was mak ing its second Atlantic crossing at the time. It was the sinking of the s. S. L:t!--.tania, c few vein- kttvr by j .. '(;,.;,,;, submarine, which kindled w Vpui k which cariied tin- United Man.- into the World War. Miller landed in New York and lived there for awhile and then mov ed to Cleveland where he made his home for a short time. For the great er part of his life in his adopted country he lived in Wilmington, X. C , from which city he csimct o Beau fort to open the Miller Furniture Company here on September 15, U.'3i). His firm is located on Turner street in the I'enoyer building. Press Qlcaninqa THE GENTLEMAN WITH THE SCYTHE Millions of thrifty Americans are liner fnr ol.) acre throueh life insurance. But how many ot these j millions will live to enjoy the fruits of their frugality? ! Cold statistics would undoubtedly ; give a rather chilling answer. Yet, zehind the statistics lie almost un blievable tales of personal neglect by i individuals who scrupulously heeded , the dictates of modern business and social life, but just as scrupulously ignored the warning twinges of fail ing health. Over 70,000 persons died of tuber culosis in the United States last year. Most of those deaths could have been avoided, if the victim had but "played ball" with nature and the medical profession. The prick of a tippHIo (Tuberculin Test), the snap of an X-ray camera, both of i which would have required only a few seconds of time, and the gentle man with the scythe would have been sent on his way alone. Life insurance and good health are vital to the peace of mind of ev ery breadwinner. Don't allow your self to be "caught short" on either. (Industrial News Review). JOHN BROWN'S PAY CHECK According to an article by Frank K. Kent, current slackening ot gov ernment borrowing is a deceiving phe nonenon. Instead of borrowing direct ly from the banks or the people thru the issuance of bonds, the govern ment has now adopted a policy of spending the funds supposedly placed in trust with the government, by the people, under the Social Security act. In other words, the money which is taken out of John Brown's weekly pay check, and which the gov ernment has promised to set aside to care for him in old age or when he is unemployed, is promptly being dumped into the public treasury for general expenses !
