Our principal, Mr. Gaskill, call
ed a faculty meeting Tuesday aft
ernoon, Jan. 27. At this time he
put before his teachers the pro
gram that we are expected to car
ry out for Defense. He called for
volunteers for certain phases of
the work and received a response
of 100 percent. As ever, he is
ready to do his part in every way
possible, and as ever, his teachers
stand ready to say: "Lead on and
we will follow."
We were sorry , to lose two of
our number, Mr. Loyd Pigott and
Mr. Reginald Moore, but feel very
fortunate indeed in the selection
made to fill the vacancies.

Tobacco Weights
Nearly Perfect
RALEIGH, February 4. -Commissioner
of Agriculture W
Kerr Scott was informed today
that "shrinking in tobacco weigh
ed on warehousemen's scales last
season was less than two-tenths of
one per cent, revealing a record
as near perfect as could be ex
pected."
A report of C. D. Baucom,
chief of the weights and meas
ures division of the State Depart
ment of Agriculture, showed that
during the 1941 season:
A total of 1,112 visits were
made to tobacco warehouses for
the purpose of checking weigh
ing processes; 5,045 baskets of
leaf representing 563,882 pounds
were reweighed, within an aver
age of five hours after the orig
inal weighing, with only 1,120
pounds net loss being shown.
"The average los or erroi per
1,009 pounds of leaf weighed
was two pounds, ov two tenths
of one per cent," Baucom said,
praising the "cooperation of
warehousemen, weighmasters, and
buyers who have largely been
responsible for the remarkable
record established during the
season."
Scales of tobacco warehouse
men operating on all belts were
checked prior to the opening of
the markets.

Fire
A very tragic event happened to
one of our school members, Mil
dred Lawrence, of Otway, last
week. Her home and all posses
sions were destroyed by fire. Our
school, as usual in such cases, came
to the rescue and took up a col
lection for her, totaling $12.50,
and also several garments.

Camp Davis Cagers
Are Undefeated
No outside team has succeeded
in defeating a Camp Davis basket
ball team, a summary of activities
in Farnsworth Hall, the camp
sports arena, indicates.
Eight teams have entered the
post to challenge soldier combina
tions, but all have been unsuccess
ful. The teams represented three
colleges, two white and one color
ed, two industrial teams from Ra
leigh, N. C, an all-star squad from
the Wilmington Ship-Building Co.,
and a colored community center
team.
The severest tests for ifce Camp
Davis teams will come on Wed-
During January 10,000 enlisted
men made use of the new athletic
building, which was opened in De
cember. There were 8,000 specta
tors and 2,000 active participants
in games and exercise.
Lieut. Henry A. Johnson, Ath
letic Officer, on the basis of events
already scheduled-, anticipates a
50 percent increase in use of the
hall for February, and 100 percent
by the end of March.
By LEON MANN, Jr.
Newport Cagers upset undefeat
ed Atlantic seamen Friday night
by the socre of 19-13, using a new
defense cooked up by the Newport
club. The first quarter ended with
Atlantic in the lead 3-0, but New
port inspired by the entrance of
their captain, June Haskett, com
ing in with an injured leg, made
the score board show a song of 9-5
Newport leading at the half. New
port's first point came as Guard
C. Hill sank a perfect long shot,
followed by another long one by
W. Hill. Atlantic came up with a
hook shot by their center, giving
them their only two points during
the remainder of the period.
Center Fulcher of Atlantic got
the tip, but lost the ball to forward
Lockey, who passed the ball to
Haskett, who faked, returning to
Lockey who made a corner shot.
Atlantic came up with eight
points, making the score a tie 13
to 12, during the last five minutes
of the agme. Pittmann, Atlantic'
captain, sank three consecutive
long shots. Newport regained the
lead, making the score as the whis
tle blew, 19-13. Captain Elbebrt
Pittmann of Atlantic was the
game's high scorer with eight
points. Lockey, Newport co-captain,
had six points.
Clean sportsmanship was evi
dent on both teams.
This upset creates a mix-up in
the Carteret basketball games,
with Beaufort having defeated
Newport two games this year, At
lantic having beaten Beaufort fit
Beaufort last week, and Newport
whipping Atlantic. Another in
teresting detail is that the scores
of both Newport-Attlantic games
are the same 19-13. Atlantic whip
ped Newport to that tune some
time ago.
