The University of N. C. is now
fairly started on the 116th year
of its sei’vice to the xjepple of the
state with an enrollment which
bids fair in spite of the rai.sing'
of entrance i'equirements for the
academic schools, to equal or
pass last year figures, 821. The
senior class which numbers 105
is believed to be the largest ever
registered at a southern institu
tion. The sophomore and junior
classes about novniai. As yet no
statistics have been compiled of
these t\yo classes. In a recent
speech delived befoi’e the state
association of county superinten
dents assembled in Chapel Hill
President Venable outlined part
ly the administrative . plans for
the coming year. Realizing-that
the college was crowded to the
limit of the capacity of the equip
ment provided by the state, he
planned to havie the institution
grow in point of efficiency and
instead of expanding in numbers
he desired a small “lopping-oif
as he put it, in the number who
registered last year. With this
end in veiw the facility had made
the requirements for entrance
irito the academic school ,20 per
cent higher with the hope of
bringing' down the acadeniic
registration some 50 or 60, just
as the inauguration of an entr
ance requirement for two years
academy woi'k had cut the medi
cal school from 115 to 60. The
.fact that as many freshmen have
already I'egistered as had regis-
ttred last year this time proves
that no normal restrictions made
on the part of tiie administration
of the college can_ remedy the
overcrowded condition of the
University. The help and the
remedy must come in the form
of an enlarged equipment made
possible by an increased appro
priation by the state legislature.
The new year sees several
members of the faculty gone
because of inability on the part
of the administration to give the
promotion and increased salary
necessary to keep them here.
Among those who are gone are:
Dr. Dolly of the medical school,
Dr. Mills of the department of
chemistry, Dr. Ruifin of the law
school, Mr. Eaton of the depart
ment of geology, and a few men
of less impdrtance.
The several vacancies in the
faculty v^^hictf have been caused
by death, resignation and grant
ing of leave of abscence have
been filled with a success on
which the executive committee
of the board of trustees and the
administrative faculty may well
congratulate themselves.
Dr. Brain takes the chair of
Greek made vacant by the death
of Dr. Alexander. Dr. Bain
comes from the University of
South Carolina where he has a
high reputation as a scholar and
teacher. Prof. Lucius Polk .-Mc
Gee has taken up his- work as
dean of the law school. He suc
ceeds Judge J. C. MacRae, who
died last year. Dr. Thomas Ruf
fin, resigned, is succeeded by
Prof. McIntosh of the lav/ school
of Trinity College.
Dr. A. S. Wheeler associate
professor of organic chemistry,
Dr. Henderson, of the depart
ment of mathematics, and Prof.
Toy of the department of Ger
manic languages, who are absent
in Europe on leave of abscenc^,
are succeeded by D,r. Hall of
Clemson College, Guy R. Clem
ons of the Harvard scieaitific
school, and Dr. Viles of the Uni
versity of Ohio respectively.
Dr. Mims, who has been study
ing in Europe since his election
in 1908 has taken up his work
as Professor of English Litera
ture. Dr. Royster has been pro
moted to the full professorship
of English Language, Professor
Graham retains his position as
Professor of English Literature
and head of the department of
English. Professor Graham’s
i work consists mainly in courses
!in self-expression. As dean of
! the college he has not time to of-
i fer very many courses. Dr.
■Royster’s specialty is Philology.
I Dr. Mims is known best as an
: inspirational teacher of poetry,

Nowhere is one able to iind
such gloriously good playfellows
as arnong the members of the
Ball family. All the w&y tip
from the red gas ball and the toy
ballon that delight the little chap
to the rugged leather pigskin
fellow that belongs to the college
boy, there are shades and /vary
ing'sizes in the members of ciiis
jolly family, but one and all have
the same characteristics-- t.h2y
want to play.
Dodge ball is a splendid 0’ul,-Qf“
door game. The players are di
vided into to even groups, one
gToup joining hands to form a
circle while the players of the
other group stand inside the cii*-
cle. The larger the circle oa f e
outside, the more difficult wiii be
the game. A basketball should
be used if there are a good ;nany
players.
The circle players must try arid
hit the center men with the ball
the center men dodging to es
it, jumping, stooping, or resofij
ingto any means save leavliig
the circle. As soon as a pkyer
ii hit he must loss hack the
bajl and leave the citcl^.
The man remaining longest, in
side wins the game. In re} >eat-
ing the game, the center mi n of
the previous game form the ciir-
cle, and the circle players rhust
take their turn at dodging the
ball inside.
Circle ball calls for a circl'i- of
players who stand about five fedi
apart. The ball is passed rajjidly
from one player to another, £t;s
direction being often reserved/dir
it is suddenly tossed across thi'e
circle to the utter confusioii of
the player who did not see it
coming. Each player must be
alert and ready to catch-.the bali
If one fails he must sit dovv.a,
and the game is won by the ’ tw^

This Was a Snake.
Mr. Blake Reece, son of Mr.
Albert Reece, one of the lending
farmers and merchants of North
east, Onslov/ county, killed the
largest rattlesnake yesterday
that was ever seen in this section.
The young man, accompanied
by his dog, was making a trip
around his father’s plantation
when the dog treed and when
Mr, Reece came up - he was hor
rified to find the largest snake
that he had ever seen, outside of
a circus, striking at his dog. A
well aimed shot however, put his
snakeship out of business.
Actual measurement showed
the reptile to be eight feet long,
eighteen inches in circumference
around his body, five inches be
tween the eyes, and it carried a
chime of thirty-two rattles.—
