Poets and writers of all ages have had something sweet and pleas ant to say of this lovely season. Many stories have been told of this beautiful season, but the In dian Legend of the South Wind is to me the most interesting. Very few are acquainted with thi^. beautiful story and thinking perhaps many of the Dispatch readers would enjoy it, I wish to tell the Legend. Far away to the southward, they said, there lived a handsome youth, whose name Showandasse, the God of the South Wind. He, it was, who sent the soft spring winds to wake up the flowers and set the trees in leaf and bloom, to melt the snows of the far North, and unlock the ice fetters of the rivers and brooks. This noble fellow lived among the palms and banana groves of the Southland, and passed his days in a most delightful state of ease luxurious idleness. Soft winds always played about him; thick evergreens of magnolia and bay made a canopy for his hammock, which hung from the giant grape vines of his tropical home. Or ange flowers perfumed his re treat and the rich juice of the lemons and pomegranates slack ed his thirst. Thus he spent his happy life, and the smoke from his giant pipe ascended and drifted to the Northward stars forming the soft haze of spring time. But while Showandasee lived this contented life of ease, idleness, he was all alone in his luxurious retreat and one day while hunt ing on the green prairies outside his wigwam he saw to the North ward a beautiful maiden, who wav the loveliest being he had ever known. Immediately his heart went out to this beautiful maiden, and when he went to his vdg-wam again, everything was cheerless and dreary in his eyes and he could lind no plea sure in anything. Every day he sought the prairie and saw the beautiful girl, but he could hot win her to him. She seemed drifting gradually to the North ward and though he sent his ar rows after the deer in the most expert and perfect manner, though he play^ upon his pipes the sweetest notes he knew, though he sent his South winds to kiss her vrith their most fra grant breath, arid to whisper his love to her, she still faded slowly to Northward, and at last she was gone. The beautiful snow maiden was claimed by the God of White Horse-land, the God of the North wind. And Showan dasee was left among’ his tropical vines and flowers, desolate. Then he laid himself upon his hammock and wept showers and showers of crystal tears. And behold, his tears fell upon the Northland in April showers; they kissed the apple trees into pink and white bloom, and dressed the cherries in bridal garment, they clothed the brown old oaks in suits of daintiest green; they sparkled like jewels in the violet’s eyes and did everything that was needf ul to clothe the home of the Snow Maiden in some of the bciauty and freshness which was constantly around her weeping lovei’, the forlorn God of the South Wind.
