COL. ROOSEVELT SHOT
IN MILWAUKEE
I Continued from last week.
i
j With in every few seconds after
1 Col. Roosevelt was shot a howl
! of rage went up. Lynch him!
Kill him!" cried a hundred men.
Col. Roosevelt himself in the
prisoners behalf.
He raised his hand and motion
ed to the crowd to fiall back.
;Stop, stop,”he, cried «stand
back, don’t hurt him.”
The men in the crowd at first
were not disposed to heed his
words, but ai length fell back
and permitted Martin and Cap
tain Girard to eary the man into
the hotel’’Are you hurt Colonel?
a hundred voices called out.
,0h no,*' he responded with a
smile, ” Missed me that time. I’m
not hurt a bit.”
,I think we’d better be going
on,” he said to the other mem
bers of his party. ”or we will be
late.”
No one ia the party mcluding
Col. Roosevelt himself, entertsiiiit
6d the slightest notion that the'
Colonel had been shot. He felt
no shock or rain at the time and
it was assumed thnt the bullet
went wild. As soon .as the Cblor
nelhad assured himself the assa-
sin was safe in the hands of the
police he gave orders to drive
to the auditorium. They had
driven hardly one of the
four blocks from the hotel'
the audtiorium when John Me
Grath Col. Rposevelt^'s secretary |
uttered, a sharpe exclamation'
and pointed to the Colonels bre
ast.. - . ■
’’Look, Colonel,”he said "the
re is a hole in jour overcoat”
Colonel Roosevelt looked do
wn and saw the hole then unbu-
tioned the big army coat which
he was wearing and thmst his
hand beneath it when he withd
rew it his fingers were covered
with blood. '
Colonel Hooosevelt was not di
smayed by his discovery.
” It looks as though I had been
shot, he said,” but I dont think
it is anything serious.”
Dr. Scurry Terrel of Dallas, Tex
Colonel Roosevelt’s physican,
who bad entered th^: automobile
just before itst.artd off, insisted
that the Coionel return to the hol
ed. He paid no attention to the
suggestion how ever and the car ,
was driven on to the anditorum
After the speech an examation
showed that it had been made by
abullet of large size. It entered
the fleshy part of his right breast
half way between the lower rib.
The physicians found that jthey
knew no more after their ex
amination than before as to the
location of the bullet and it was
decided to send for an X^ray ma
chine to determine to what depth
the missi’e bkd penetrated. While
he was waiting for the X-ray ma
chine. Colonf I Roosevelt sat upow
the operating table and talked
politics and joked with the phy
sicians.
