Whatever may be said of some of Mr. Lawson’s per- fsonal enterprise in the past, it is undeniable that he'is equipped [with knowledge to tell the facts about his subject. And it is unquestionable that stock-watering has atremenf^' ..s jinfiuence upon the prices of necessaries of life-. The evil confronts jevery investigator and every agency doling with the problems of fadiusting living conditions. It raises itself before the Interstate jCo'nimerce Commission, before every body which deals with the (relations of capital and labor, before every association or party fwhieh i^eeks to meet complaints of the high cost of living. It is the thing which the interests which devised it are most jdetermined to perpetuate for it is at the very core of their power. Ilr is by far the largest single item in the high cost of living in this Icountry. Misx Eva 0ell GoiFortli Becomes The’Bride of WiiHam J. ^kjsr. Washington, Nov, 12. —“Col umbia, S. C.” was the recipient of a vast deal of \\idely distrib uted publicly this morning—and publicity of the sort that does not hurt. The special correspondents at Princeton pf New York, Phila delphia, Baltimore and Waishing- ton papers conveyed to their jouma’s the distiet impression that Columbia’s offer to be the winter capital of the United States was favorably received by the president ele5)t, and in head- iii e? in those lepers this morn ing Columbia is referred to as the “probable winter capital.” The Washington Post and the New York Sun give especiil prominence to the visit of the Columbia delegation. The Post-, in its headline, says, “South Carolina’s Tender of Boyhood Home Please President-elect. Hopes to Spend Part of Each Winter There, " And that was what the governor said to the correspondents. " The Washi igton Herald Herald quoted Gov, Wilson as follows: ‘They asked me to say that I would go down there this winter but I explained my duties would not permit me but I i^vould be de lighted to consider it for another winter,^ “ ‘It is a house of four large rooms on the first floor and five bed rooms on the second floor. We sold it when we left Colurr- bia about 1877, 3f years ago. I lived there about five years. It has been occupied continuously ever since and is in a pretty good state of preservation. I cer tainly would be inclined to use it. It stands on an acre of ground. The squares, as they call them in Columbia, are fonr acres, abd this is a quarter of a square. Of course I expect to hiave ihy same old room when I return to the old homestead.’ “Mr, Gonzales, of the delega tion, said, after calling oh the governor, that the house had been purchased by the people of South Carolina, and that it had b^en placed at the disposition of president-elect for a period of eight years.’ “But Mr. Bryan says that Mr. Wilson is to only hav^ne term, ’ it was suggested." ' “ ‘That is where Mr. Bryan is wrong,’ was the prompt reply.” Mr. Gonzales passed through Washingtgn today returning to Columbia in advance of other members of the delagation, sev eral of whom went cn t> New York. Mayor Gibbef stopped in Baltimore fpr a few hours to see his son. Mr. Gonzales said he j-egarded the attitude of Gover nor Wilson and his family toward Columbia’s invitation as very fa vorable and he expected the ac ceptance to be made positive just as soon after the inaugumtion As the president could think of mat^ tera affecting him personally.
