C Citizan Pablic Service In recent years the great public service corporatins have taken hew desartae, ’ in that they dernand of their en7ployes in that: ai! their relation to the previl. The result have been a higher state of efficiency has been, attained in al'i departments of public uiiiities, and what is ' more, the ^m-a'n with a grough, ’ ’ he who.^e chief interest in life, has be^??-; to find fault yith everv- thing- and everyhrwiy T^ith vvhich and with vvhom be ha.' on per» sonal concern> lias found his lit'dd rap^d!'^’ vi^!^’rov.Mny. mankind, deS^ not. As is generally known, telephone operator*, and they are nearly always of the gen tier sex, are jr^Quiredip ^G/,polite^. ,all ti'raes Ma lihaerall circumstan ces.” It is £|i written law that a telephone girl must take even foul abuse abuse from some dnKik6n loafer without reply. One can reg^d that rule whs sees fit but it is a poor rule that dosent work both ways, liie public is 4mpatient with the telephone girl, for the most part because she is inyisible, and a^ain because of conditions over wk eh she has no control, such as a neglectful subscriber who fails to answer his telephone when he is called. In cases of this sort the telephone operator is afcsoitely 1 lameless, yet we have heard m^n, and women too, berate "central” and later report her to higher authorities be»use "they couldn.t get any answer.” In many cases it happens that a man is out of his office when his telephone num ber is called, yet the unfortunate Operator is blamed for this too. Telephone users should at -all times extend that cdurtesy and poUtness which they demaud from' tSose who serve then*. life at its best is not arosy one for the telephone girl as a visit to any city exchange willreadily show.' The trouble is that the ’.dear public" koows so little what it is talking about when it ”kieks’’from force of habit', that a little education , in the spere of public utilities woald go a long v.^ay and might acomplish some good. The following remarks are applicable to all lines of public servise—the railroads, street car systems and telegraph lines. In all of these the public expects much, and is Vvtiling to-give but little.
