T./?V • i/V -•■, - .-*■ ;;; * ^ I ly ^ :> ifh & Not since 1884 has there been isuch an outburst of tornadic storms as that which _ occured in the west and south this month. A full-fiedged toj’nado. is the most awe-inspiring’ meteor that ever sweeps through the atmos phere, An ordinary tempesi creeps upon its victims by more gradual steps,, gains strength by degrees, covers the whole, coun try for hundreds of miles around with its indefinite shadow' and seems only a common storm that has developed unusual power, But a tornado is a kind of at- rnospheric 'demon, Vv-hose black distorted form can be seen swift ly approaching from afar, whirl ing and dancing likegigantic dervish and tearing up the v»^ry soil in its fury. It lets down from the menac ing cloud above a huge tromb® trunk of inky blackneJ’s, with lighting playing about it, and, whizzing with the speed of a huge buaz saw, it plows a path througii a'forest; tears avi'ay the front of a gravel bank with the force of a hydraulic jet; scoops up, the contents of a pond to the very muck; sucks away creeks. It demolishes barns, haystacks houses, churches, scatteringtheir remnants over a square mile of territory, snatches up cattle, horses, sheep and even men and women—sometimes dashing tht m to death, and sometimes gi\nng a wild ride through the air only to set them down at last unharm ed. The path of a tornado is from 100 to 600 yards wide, and the length of-, its course may vary from'one or two up to 50 miles. Almost invariably it moves to ward the northeast, with a speed of from 20 to 50 mJles an hour. The center, where the destruc tive pov/er is greatest occupies from one to five minutes in pas sing over a given point, . On ac count of the uniformity in the direction of t.he movement of tornadoes, it is not difficult to get out of their track if they can be seen, or heard coming a quar ter or a half hour in advance. But when, as hapi.iened last week, a horde of these "twisters” bi'eaks u,pon the face of the land there is liardly any meterologica] disaster so serious s,s t);r..t which they produce.
