Onejreaspn whyamill'n^r ages payidly is because every woman who comes|in to try on a hat al ways says: ‘1 washed my hair this morning and I can't do a thing with it.*' What has become of the old- fashioned man who took off his hat when he entered an office. The world is so small that we all have to behave ourselves as well as in heaven or we’ll be talk ed about. Heredity may fail to work out in the case of baldness, but it never fails when it comes to red hair. One thing about a woman is that she doesn't have to visit twenty saloons and spend ten dollars when she wants to get a headache. Lots of girls who look like Princesses on the street look that way because their mothers are slaves. A gold medal to the school boy or girl between the ages of 10 and 15 who writes the best com position, not toexceed 800 words, on the repair and mairitertance of earth roads, is to be award^ by Logan Waller Page, Director, Office of Public Roads, United States Department of Agricul- t jre, Washington, D, C. A1 compositions must be submitted to Mr. Page’^ before May 15,1913, and the medal will be awarded as soon thereafter as the compo sition can be graded. The com position may be based on know ledge gained from books or other sources, but no quotations s lould be made. After many ^years’ experience in dealing with the public road situation of the country, it is Mr. Page’s belief that ignorance on the subject of repair and main tenance of roads is as much the cause of their bad condition as any other factor. It is expec ted that the competition will bring about a better understand ing of the subject of repair and maintenance in the rural dis tricts. Many children living in the rural districts have experienced the disadvantages of roads made impassable through a Jack of proper maintenance and it is ex pected that their interest in the competition will stimulate great er interest among the parents. Bad roads have prevented many children from obtaining a prop er education and have prevented doctors from reaching the side of rural patients in time to save their lives. Any child between the ages mentioned, attending a country school, may compete. Only one side of the paper must be ^writt- en on; each page should bfe num bered; the name, age, and ad dress of the writer, and the name and location of the school which he or she is attending must be plainly written at the tqp of the first page. The ann ouncement of the competition has been sent to the superin tendents of schools in the rural ditsricts. No further information cai^ be obtained fr'jm the Office of Public Roads. This announ- cement should be plain to every one, and all children will thus start on a bases of equality. Joe. H. Freeland W. P. Ireland, T. S. Faace^tte, A. A. Apple, W:P.Daitey, H. C. Stout, J. G. C., April 16. ~ While reporte receiv€^ liere from different points m the trucking belt indicate that sonae damage was done to strawberries during the cold snap 3*f the. past few days, yet it is not thought that the loss to the truckers wiW be very heavy, because -of the fact that the lorries in Virginia and Tennessee have already been retarded, and will likely not be placed on the market untiJ moit of the crop from this section has gone forward, the result being that high prices will prevail, v/hich would not be if the berries from North Carolina, ¥irginia and Tennesse were thrown on the market at the saime time. Truckers in this section report that blooms on berries not pro tected by straw have been affect ed by frost and the cold weather the damage being variously esti mated at 10 to 25 per c>ent; but tbe growing fruit has not been damaged to any appreciable ex tent. ^ Aiready car lots are ning to move forward. the great 1913 Cross Country Rambler Car with, the Unit Gaso line Electric Motor. A girl who has just discovered that she has a figure puts on as much agony as a fellow who has discovered tihat he can raise a mustache. Th^e are a lot of useless things in the world, but a goatee will pretty nearly head the list. The difference between little girls and big girls Is that when Httle giirJ once says she dosen’t like isaen to kiss h6r she means it. When a girl forgets to pull down her shades at night a wlaole lot of men in the neigh borhood are afflicted with inso- mania. The weather is still chilly, but the girls are exhibiting th^ir Swiss cheese shirtwaists. If a girl really wants a hus band a $15 pair of corsets will do rnore to land him than a| $1,500 course in music. And lots of narrow-minded women have to go through a door sideways. A girl’s handkerchief may be large enough to cry in, but it isn’t much help to her when she has a cold in her head. It is hard to appreciate the fact that a girl has a rosebud mouth w^cii discover that she has been eating onions. The reason a girl has to carry a watch on her waist is that the blame thing is always stopped. There are lots of surprises in life.
