committee of the Democratic
national committee organized
and discussed preliminary plans.

During the fali of 1874 Mann
pitched ‘several games in one
week and his peculiar delivery
wore the skin from the tips of
the fingers. In the ifinal contesx
of the week he was obliged to
play third base. Late in the
game he was forced to relieve
the pitcher in order to save the
game. Owing to the tendei* con
dition of his fingers, Mann was
obliged to tlirow the bail with
little or no grip.
He immediately noticed^ that
his delivery was breaking in an
odd manher which caused oppos
ing batters to strike out. Dur
ing the winter months he con
tinued to experiment and in ti e
spring bioosomed out as a pitcher
with a real outcurve at his com
