ST^WN, Sept 2^, Oct' 2, 9, WHAT PRESIDENT ROOSEVELT, GOVERNOR BROUGHTON AND THE EDITOR HAVE TO SAt ABOUT IT This is newspaper week throughout the country, a week set apart for calling the attention of the people to the incalculable val^ ue of a free press as one of the foundations of all American institu tions* , . ' " MR. HOOSEVELT’S WORDS “The recurrence of nationar newspaper week should awaken in the hearts and souls of all Americans a renewed determination to defend and maintain and perpetuate the priceless heritage of a free press. ^ “The maintenance of an unfettered press, informed by truth and guided by courage and conscience and wholehearted de votion tb the public welfare, is a fundamental obligation of patriot ism. “I trust as a result of the forthcoming observance that Ameri cans everywhere will have a renewed sense of the incalculable blessing which a free press confers. It must be maintained against all assaults/' GOVERNOR BROUGHTON FOLLOWS UP Urging North Carolinians to join in the observance, the chief executive called it “an effort of the greatest significance.” “It comes at a time when the freedom of the press and freedom of speech are more strictly limited and Irestricted throughout the earth than at any time in modern history,” he said. “These rights . . . will be enhanced and fortified by an adequate 0bs^vance.;0f this important pe riod set apart a« ne5^pape^r'week. “Not on.lyf do theli^^^apers of the land exemplify , this guaranty of the.: freedom of the press, but.likewise they have a tre^ niendous part in'ttiiintaining and keeping alive those other heritages guaranteed .^by the constitution, including the freedoml to worship God according to the mdividual choice. It is esseiitial to democ!racy that we have a free press. Jefferson, the great est of our apostles of democracy, put a free press as essential to all other free doms and to democracy itself. “An informed press is one of the great bulwarks of the people. In any democra;- cy the people on the street must be well informed if democracy is to work and en dure ; and the press and the radio consti^ tue the only means of keeping our citi zens up with what is going on. “The converse of this is of course true’; it has been demonstrated that the first step of dictators is always to clamp down on the freedom of the press and freedom of worship. At the present moment it is true that only on the American continent do the workers and the housewife and cit- zesn generally have the privilege of read ing about the world and its events and about their neighbors without the obscur ing touch of a censor’s pencil.” THE WAY THE READERS CAN STAND BY A FREE PRESS We never know the value of our great est blessings until we are deprived of them. Freedom of the press, freedom of religion, freedom of speech and freedom of assembly are the foundation stones ‘of American greatness. Never before has there been a time when the people of the country should more fully understand and appreciate their value. It is particularly true in relation to the local newspapers. The local newspaper^ is the lungs of the community through which the breath of life pulsates. Any community which has no local newspaper as its, mouthpiece, its clearing house for all the best of the community, is indeed a poor place. The local newspaper is not a money making institution, nor is it a charitable institution. It is both a business enter prise and a public institution. It can be useful only as it helps and interprets its people. It can exist as a business enter prise only by the support it is given in subscriptions and advertising. These are Beasley’s Farm 219 Law Building paid for in money of the realm, for value received. But in addition to value re ceived by advertisers and subscribers, there is a large surplus of benefit to the community. As said, no community can long exist and hold its youth and enter prise without it. Clearly, the way that the people can show their interest and the value they place upon a free press is by giving it bus iness support. Pay your subscription and renew promptly. The Weekly has a large number of sub scribers on its lists whose subscriptions now need renewing. Fall in with the pur pose of newspaper week by sending your renewals. Every subscriber should at the very least renew promptly. And during newspaper week every one who sends a dollar for his own subscripeion may have the privilege of sending the Weekly one year to some friend complimentary.
