We stopped at the Ogbui’ns who have a delight ful home and know how to entertain. They had with them Rev. Dr. Weaver and son, Rev. J. E. Thompson, Rev. Mr. Erwin, Dr, Bradshaw and myself. Mi;s. Lanejj, , IVtrs., Yates and Miss Bright, their daughters, with them. The 20th: We took tea :wth' my old friend, Mrs. Fetna Crowe and her ^ns, a charming family;i they have just fi!nisjied an eleganti home. Spent the.night at Mrs.(Plum Heath’s. En- joyinjc /; the conferdnce very much, The ^2nd: Returned honve^ visited Mi’g. Billie Wolfe on the way back.” November 27: “Thanksgiving day— We have very much to be thankful for •—liJe,' health, strength, good crops, fair prices, good preachers and good sqhool teachers. “Mollie is sick from vaccination. Had a little skift of snow about one «(»*clock. Had chj.cken and celery for dinner. The 28th: Charles Elliott and Ben Hawfield went to Charlotte for the new church doors for Harrison.” December broke well for the Ard- >^ys and other Mecklenburg’ farmers. The diary for the first reads: “Our wheat and oats look well, hogs fat tening fast, cows doing well, horses in goo.d order, and cotton advancing, ■worth above 8 cents.” Turkey and Venison December 25 “Clear and cold. We had a treat at Harrison for the church and Sunday school; the best we ever liad. Gave all of the children some candy,, oranges, apples and bananas and served the best dinner I ever saw in the old church, had fine singing, led by Prof. Richard Bv Hunter, and some nice i ireeitations. The 126th: We had h at;'home a reunion of the Ardrey-’family',' all the children and grand cMldr-^fi with -us. Had for din ner ' fl^'i-'year-old tui'key and a 'Dr. Crowell br'ought from Burgaw. Thirty persons partook of tfce meal, leaving plenty for the servants. "We should be very happy to have all of the family together, perhaps, never again. The 27th: All dined with Billie and Bobbie Cunning ham, •\^ith Dr. Kell added. Had tux’- key ,and a pleasant day. The 28th: All wetnt to Sunday school at Harri son and held the last meeting in the old church that we and our fathers have worshipped in for 55 years—it Was built in 1847. W e have sold the biiilding to the Rev. A. L. Stough foi a Bap|;ist church at Pineville, and it vnll be taken down and moved this ■week. Rev. Mr. Stough paid us $100 for it. The 29th: All the Ardrey family had turkey dinner vnth Jimmie and Sallie. Everybody enjoyed it. The last day of 1902: Billie Cunning ham and I went to Harrison to see them tearing down the old church; it is sad to see it go but all old things must decay and pass away. An ele gant new church takes its place.” Cfiptain ^rdrey’s sadness over the loss of the old church and his coriso- lUtion that the old gives way to the lifew brings sad memories to me. One of my grandsons, seven years ago, suddenly became aware that friends t^ass away. An elderly lady that all #ir connection called “Aunt,” died. '|he youngster was curious to know What had happened to her. His grand mother explained to him that all old and persons — trees, horses, | of "my" dear oid frieM James" M circuit. Rev. C. M. Pickens, pastor, and that Miss Kittie Squires was the teacher of the community school for 1904. “New Year’s day,” it added, “had with us for dinner, Mr. and Mrs. John N. Howie, Mr. and Mrs. Samuel H. Elliott, James P. Ardrey and family. William M. Ardrey and family, Em ma, Alice and Annie Ax’drey, and Mil ler Wheeler. Mollie had two fine hens for dinner. I was too unwell to eat anything.” : The John N. Howie, frequently re ferred to by Captain Ardrey, was a well known Confederate veteran who lost a leg in the War. He asked no one odds at farming or being a good citizen. At the beginning of 1907 Captain Ardrey said: “Thank the Lord for another years life and protection and all the blessings He has given us.” That year He passed away. His in ventory of his farm and stock showed that he had: “Two horses, Henry and Zeb. three mules, Daisy, Berk and Lame Jack; 15 head of cattle, one sow and six shoats. The year before we made 36 bales of cotton, and a good corn crop. Spent §150.00 improving our tenant houses, and covering one side of our own dwelling.” He had one daughter at the Nor mal College, Greensboro, a son at Rutherford College, and spent $125.00 on the wedding of another daughter, | $35.00 on a mountain trip. He killed 1,300 pounds of pork. Records the Facts Every January he announced the names of his preacher, his presiding elder, his school teacher and his ten ants. Rev. Mr. Pickens was the min ister at Harrison, Rev. Mr. Thompson, the presiding elder, Miss Mary Jame son, the teacher, and his tenants, Mr. Dabbs, Will Walkup, John Love, Byar Howie, Jack Springs, Henry Glenden- in and Scott Wharton. The diary for January 2 reads; Erskine and Holt (two of his sons) took the turkeys and chickeins to town, and got 15 cents a pound for the turkeys and 50 cents a piece for the | hens. Selling our cotton seed at 30 cents a bushel. Sold my last bale of cotton at 9 cents a pound.” j January 17: “Sister Emma, Sam El liott, Bud and Jennie (Mr. and Mrs.j William Ardrey), and Mrs. Turner^ Barber spent the day with us, quilt ing a mighty pretty quilt for Alice (Mrs. Stough).” I The old custom of visiting was kept, up by the Ardrey family, and the din ners were excellent. January 25 Mr. Ardrey noted: “We all spent the day at Will Howie’s. (Mr. Howie married Miss Elliott, a niece of Captain Ardrey).^ Those present were: Mr. and Mrs.j Samuel Elliott, Mr. and Mrs. Williami Ardrey, Mr. ant Mrs. Everett Howie I (his wife was an Elliott) anjl Mrs. John N. Howie. He had a pleasant day and a good dinner.” ' January 30: “Cloudy and cold. The Negroes all gone to the funeral of Prince Broom; no work.” ! February 1: “Nothing doing on the farm. Jimmie (his son) and Blanch (James Ardi’ey’s wife), Bud and Jen nie, spent the day with us. i “I am quite unwell from my cough | and the grip.” February 5: “I was quite unwell' and Dr. Potts came to see me; m.y heart bad, and coughing.
