Some months ago a movement was put on foot helping the colored people of the South to emigrate'to Califor nia. as well as other western States. Gr. at inducements arc offered by thi railroads, end unselfish, intelligem agents may be found throughout the South to give all desired information of the gold country. These agents give glowing accounts of the country. In the first place good living wages is paid the laborer, and if he is any ways economical and industrious, he Can save something, and at the end of a year or so can buy and furnish a home. Land can he secured by simply going to it and settling on it. The land is said to be much more fertile and productive than ours, the climate salubrius and well suited to our peo ple ; in fact the inducements offered arc flattering. Should the colored man emigrate West is an important question at this time, lie thinks he ought to have better treatment and get better wages for his labor than he gets in the Southern States, Then, if he thinks he can better his material condition by going west, we do not hesitate to give him the benefit of his thoughts, and refer him to the actions of the white man. The Irish, German, and other people are coming to this coun t.y by thousands because in their countries they think they are too many of them, and they will do better in the new country. The Yankee and the Jew are filling the business houses of the south and west, and why not the colored man go south, west, north, and cast, or any place he has reason to think his condition will bo bet tered ? The colored man must think, move and work for himself; but let him understand that he will not better his condition by staying or going un less he makes more than his bread and practices economy—he must save or he had better die. If white men go west, and by set tling on this government land become good and wealthy citizens, why can’t colored men do the same. The colored man must stop renting land and be come owners of the soil. The tenant system of the South has become worse than that of Ireland. You can’t find a colored man in the South who has made anything farming unless he owned the land. Inasmuch as lie can not buy land in some sections of the South, let him go where he can buy. The condition of things must change, and there is no need of longer dis guising the fact. IMPORTANT NOTICK To all the Colored Masons in the United States. The Masonic Fraternity will at once sec the utility, of having in their pos session an Annual Masonic Directory that will give the name of every Grand Lodge, Chapter, Commandery or mem bers of the Consistory, Town, City or State in which they are convened. And the name and residence of each and every individual member. Such a book published annually, will be invaluable to cvcery member of the Fraternity. The publisher earnestly requests that the Grand Secretary of each and every Lodge, Chapter, Commandery and Consistory will please forward to me, on a Postal Card his name and address, as I wish to forward each one of them a printed letter; desiring of them to accept the agency, and guar anteeing them a royalty on each hook, something to their financial and person al interest.
