observed by the business houses and
Churches of our city on Thursday.

managing it. It was well patronized.
The Charlotte Light Infantry were

They have uniforms and make a good
show.
Rev. Frank Perry will sail with
his wife next week for Liberia. He is
a graduate of Biddle and goes as a

For the Messenger.
I like the tone of the Mkssexokr,
and think Mr. Smith is doing a good
work for his people. I regret that ho
seems to get so little help from his
colored friends, and not even notice or
encouragement from the whites It
is rare that the colored raco"gcts a
word of sound advice or even thought
from those in official position. Colored
folks are simply allowed to drift
along until gobbled up for some
crime, an officers fee, a trifling mis
take. Then, Oh ! me ! what a fuss ;
and hence the papers talk !
Please publish this scrap and oblige
a Caucasian.
A Word to Colored Parents.
From the Winston Republican we
copy the following timely words of
Hon. John A. Giliner and commend
them to the careful perusal of all our
colored readers :
“Judge John A. Gilmer, in sen
tencing two colored lads during Su
perior court last week, made a very
practical address to the race, and es
pecially the parents.
“His honor stated that during his
term of office he was forcibly impressed
with the number of individuals arrest
ed for larceny and other transgressions
| of the law and that two-thirds of those
arraigned were young colored men be
tween the ages of fifteen and twenty
five.
“He further stated his observations
evinced a deplorable picture for the
race unless some steps were taken to
remedy the growing evil, and attrib
uted the fault to a great extent, to
careless parental training, and admon
ished his colored hearers that the
foundation of all true citizenship, and
respect for the la v, was the family
fireside, and urged the parents to be
more careful in homo dieipline, keep
their children from off the streets, and
out of bad company, and educate them
as their opportunities afforded and
this would be an important step to
wards elevating the social and moral
condition of the race.’’
To all Whom it May Concern.
This is to certify, that T will leave
j Charlotte December Ist for California,
j 1 wish to say to all of my friends who
j anticipate going West, that if they
! will follow me on that occasion, that I

nearly ten dollars less than any one
else, and aside from that secure them
good homes, either as servants, or on
their own homesteads —one hundred
and sixty acres each, free. I will he
able to put you off’ at any point in the
State, from Losangeles northward to
i San Francisco, Stockton, Sacramento,

a talk with all parties going, before
they leave, whether they go with me
or not, as I know the country and can
help there as well as here, and I here
by warn all parties that if they go
without first consulting me, and fail,
lam not responsible, and many will
fail if they go without my advise. I
can place cooks and waiters in position!
there at from S3O to SIOO per month,
which positions they cannot get with
out good reference from some one in
California; and for lands, no colored
man will succeed in securing free lands
without my assistance, without spend
ing one or two hundred dollars. lam

the colored people, appointed by the
State Board of the State Immigration
Association.
Hon. Author R. Briggs, President,

Board; so I am here by the highest
authority, to offer terms, etc.
Any one doubting this statement
will please address said officers, No. 10
California Street, Sanfrancisco, Cali
fornia. All who go with me Decem
ber Ist, will get special rates and
special accommodations through.
Please see me, it matters not what
others may say to you or promise you,
I will do still better; I am not a rail
road agent, hut I have the interest of
uiy people at heart. All going will
please call one day at least before

WHAT
AILS
YOU?
Do you feel dull, languid, low-spirited, life
less, and indescribably miserable, both physi
cally and mentally; experience a sense of
fullness or bloating after eating, or of “gone
ness," or emptiness of stomach in the morn
ing, tongue coated, bitter or bad taste in
mouth, irregular appetite, dizziness, frequent
headaches, blurred eyesight, “floating specks’*
before the eyes, nervous prostration or ex
haustion, irritability of temper, hot flushes,
alternating with chilly sensations, sharp,
biting, transient pains here and there, cofo
feet, drowsiness after meals, wakefulness, or
disturbed and unrefreshing sleep, constant,
indescribable feeling of dread, or of impend
ing calamity ?
If you have all, or any considerable number
of these symptoms, you are suffering from
that most common of American maladies—
Bilious Dyspepsia, or Torpid Liver, associated
with Dyspepsia, or Indigestion. The more
complicated your disease has become, the
greater the number and diversity of symp
toms. No matter what stage it has reached,
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Itledlcal Discovery
will subdue if, if taken according to direc
tions for a reasonable length of time. If not
cured, complications multiply and Consump
tion of the Lungs, Skin Diseases, Heart Disease,
Rheumatism, Kidney Disease, or other grave
maladies are quite liable to set in and, sooner
or later, Induce a fatal termination.
Dr. Pierce’s Golden Ttledicnl Dis
covery acts powerfully upon the Liver, and
through that great blood-purifying organ,
cleanses the system of oil blood-taints and im
purities, from whatever cause arising. It is
equally efficacious in acting upon the Kid
neys, and other excretory organs, cleansing,
strengthening, and healing their diseases. As
an appetizing, restorative tonic, it promotes
digestion and nutrition, thereby building up
both flesh and strength. In malarial districts,
this wonderful medicine has gained great
celebrity in curing Fever and Ague, Chills and
Fever, Dumb Ague, and kindred diseases.
Dr. Pierce’s Golden medical Dis
covery
CURES ALL HUMORS,
from a common Blotch, or Eruption, to the
worst Scrofula. Salt-rheum, “Fever-sores,"
Scaly or Rough Skin, in short, ail diseases
caused by bad blood are conquered by this
powerful, purifying, and invigorating medi
cine. Great Eating Ulcers rapidly heal under
its lienign influence. Especially has it mani
fested its potency in curing Tetter, Eczema,
Erysipelas, Boils, Carbuncles, Sore Eyes, Scrof
ulous Sores and Swellings, Hip-joint Disease,
“White Swellings," Goitre, or Thick Neck,
and Enlarged Glands. Send ten cents in
stamps for a large Treatise, with colored
plates, on Skin Diseases, or the same amount
for a Treatise on Scrofulous Affections.
“FOR THE BLOOD IS THE LIFE. M
Thoroughly cleanse it by using Dr. Pierce’s
Golden medical Discovery, and good
digestion, a fair skin, buoyant spirits, vital
strength and bodily health will be established.
CONSUMPTION,
which is Scrofula of the Lungs, is arrested
and cured by this remedy, if taken in the
earlier stages of the disease. From its mar
velous power over this terribly fatal disease,
when first offering this now world-lamed rem
edy to the public. Dr. Pierce thought seriously
of calling it his “Consumption Cure,” but
aba rule me<l that name as too restrictive for
a medieine which, from its wonderful com
bination of tonic, or strengthening, alterative,
or blood-cleansing, anti-bilious, pectoral, and
nutritive properties, is unequaled, not only
as a remedy for Consumption, but for all
Chronic Diseases of the
Liver, Blood, and Lungs.
For Weak Lungs, Spitting of Blood, Short
