Phelan who for merly operated a bucket shop in Charlotte, but who has since been doing a similar business in Atlanta As well as we can understand the case, he is charged with making fic titious quotations and realizing money thereon. He Is charged with swindling parties in Griffin, Ga., out of $20,000. Mr. Lyon, who managed Mr. Pbe- lan's Charlotte house, and who Is well remembered here.was in charge of a bucket shop at Macon, and Phe- lan's failure sent him to the walL Mr. Lyon, howevert secured his cus tomers and will pay every dollar of the losses. The commission brokerage house of Tardy & Walker, of Charlotte, has been called a bucket shop by people who don't know anything about it, but it is not a bucket shop, not even possessing the element of a concern of that character. They were in no way affected by the failure of the shops, but continue to do a strictly legitimate commission and broker age business, besides furnishing our people with accurate and reliable market reports. An Officer, a Dog, and a Muskrat Have a Fight. A lively battle occurred in the very hdart of Charlotte last night between a policeman, a dog, and a muskrat The battleground was no less a historic spot than Independ ence Square. A dog struck the ac- auaintance of the muskrat iu the gutter In front of the Central Hotel, and the rat and the dog at once got into a fight They bit and pulled at each other savagely, fighting across the street until they trot under the electric light in the square, when policeman Hoover went to the relief of the dog. The rat bit at him sav agely, and he fought it off with his club. It was finally killed by the combined efforts of the. officer and the dog, and its carcass was exhib ited on the square this morning. The rat was a monster, almost as large as an ordinary sized house cat, and its teeth were half an inch long and as sharp as needles. These ugly cus tomers frequently come up town at this season of the year, making their way up from the creeks through the sewers. W. KAUFMAN & CC. A Talk With Mr. Peschau. Rev. F. W. E. Peschau, of Wil mington, arrived the city today from Mt Pleasant and spent the after noon with his friends here. Mr. Pes chau has beeu trying to get a correct understanding of the Lutheran Sem inary matter, as a report has to be made at the coming synod, which meets at St Luke's church, in David son county, on Friday, May 2ud. It will depend upon the character of the report made at this synod, whether or not Charlotte is to get the Seminary. Mr. Peschau is an ar dent advocate for Charlotte's claims in the matter and says he would be glad to see the seminary located here. He says that the Lutherans are deeply appreciative of the aid so far extended by Charlotte and the the iuterest our people have mani fested in the matter. There Is still, we believe, tt.OOO to be raised to make up the amount re quired of Charlotte. Gent's Fine Kangaroo Hand-made Shoe, In Lace and Congress.
