Several errors have been com mitted by correspondents and others In noting the death of Dr. J. F. O. Mittag,late of Charlotte, One state ment was that the deceased had challenged six meu to dueL An other was that he lost $160,000 by suit of the Roman Catholic Church. The following letter will explain the matter: T To the editor of Thk father, J. F. O. Mittaggi lenged any man, but was challenged by one Herschel Massey, and be ac cepted the challenge, as an honora ble man would have done. In regard to the suit with the Roman Catholic Church, the property amounted to $810,000, all ofwhlch my father and mother gained, but owing to the re cent war they made a compromise with the parties. Prof. Excel!, Sam Jones' singer, arrived In the city on the Air Line train vesterdav afternoon and in (U pptnfef at the Cehtral. He has a pleasant fce and is a splendid or the choir at the tabernacle after the services last night, and a large crowd remained to hear the singing. Rev. Wm. R. Atkinson conducted the services last night The serviees to night will be led by Rev. Dr. Solomon Pool, and Mr. Excell will conduct the musical" part of the programme. Rev. Hnm Jones was expected to arrive iu the city from Aberdeen, Mississippi, this evening, but he can not reach here until Friday morn ing, on account of railroad connec tions. A telegram to this effect was received by the committee this morning. This, however, will not interfere with the opening of the meetings tomorrow morning accord ing to programme. The meetings tomorrow morning, afternoon, and night will be conducted by Prof. Excell and Evangelist Stuart Mr. Jones will reach here Friday morning, and will be in the taber nacle at 10 o'clock. THE BOOTOHJBISH. Dr. Molntoah Arrives To-Day His Lecture To-JJight A Conference to he Held at 8 O'Olock. Dr. John S. Mcintosh, the Scotch Irish leader from Philadelphia, ar rived in the city this afternoon, and is the guest of Gen. Ruf us Barringer. Dr. Mcintosh arrived on the de layed train, and waa met at the de pot by Dr. George W. Graham, and escorted to Gen. Barringer's resi dence. Dr. Mcintosh will deliver a lecture at the Y. M. C. A. hall tonight, on the Scotch Irish people, of whom there are many in Charlotte and Mecklenburg. The services at the tabernacle will be cut short iu order to permit the people to attend Dr. Mclntoh's lec ture,' which will begin in the Y. M. C. A. Hall at 9 o'clock. Previous to this, a conference of all interested in the formation of a Scotch Irish So ciety, will be held in the parlors of the Y. M. C. A. building. This con ference will convene at 8 o'clock, and all interested are expected to attend. Who Wants to be Mail Agent? The Secretary of the National Civil Service Commission says that there is a scarcity of applicants for the Railway Mail Service in the South Atlantic and Gulf States, and, to In crease the list, social examinations will be held in various parts of the States above named during the com ing summer. Oae will be held here in May, the date to be announced later, and the list of eligible for this immediate sectiou is so small that nearly every one that passes a credit able examination will stand a good chance of being appointed at an early date. Each applicant must apply to the Secretary, as above, for papers which explain themsrlves.and which give all the necessary information. The examination is not a difficult one; anybody with a common school education can easily pass it. Only those between the ages of IS and 3-5 need apply. Bates for the Sam Jones Meetings. The Seaboard Air Line Company j has announced the following rates for the Sam Jones meetings in Char lotte, from Hamlet to Rutherdton, inclusive. The rates quoted are for the round trip. The tickets are to be on sale April 24 to May 2, inclusive, good to May 5: Hamelt $3.10; Rockingham, $2.85; Pee Dee, $2.50; Lilesvllle, $2.80; Wadesboro. $2.10; Polk ton, $1.75; Peachland, $1.60; Beaver Dam, $1.86; Monroe, 95; Matthews, 45; Mt Holly, 4S;StanleyCreek,70;lron,$1.20; Liu- cotnton, $1.80; Cherryville, $1.70; Waco, $ I. Mr. John Vogel, the merchant tailor, haa tecured the city right for a new fad. it is pants without either buttons or button holes. This is a new Invention and is expected to revolutionise the style in pant. Mr. Vogel will have a lot of samples herein a few days. Just think of pant without either buttons or but ton holes! ' V - A $15,000 Tax Compromise. ' The case of State Treasurer D. W. Bain, against the Raleigh A Gaston Road, went off yesterday by a com promise. The defendant agrees that judgment may be entered in favor of the plaintiff for the sum of fifteen thousand dollars, being the amount levied and assessed upon the capital stock of the defendant company for the fiscal years 1886, 1887, 1888 and 1889. The plaintiff accepts this sum in satisfaction of all taxes due on said stock up to and Inclusive of the fiscal year 1889. But nothing in this compromise or the Judgment to be entered thereon shall be construed to estop or preju dice in any manner the plaintiff from demanding any other taxes which might be due from the defen dant upon other subjects of taxation, nor shall It be construed to estop or prejudice in any manner the defen dant from denying its liability for the tax on the capital stock afore said for future years. A Change of Schedule Wanted. People living along the Hue of the A., T. & O. road are particularly aux ious for the railroad authorities to make a slight change in the schedule of the freight train. The freight reaches Charlotte at 8.45 p. m. It is desired to shorten up the schedule during the Sam Jones meetiugs, so as to bring the train here at 8 o'clock. The people along the line could then come In for the afternoon sermon aud return to their homes on the six o'clock train. Such an arrangement would be a very conveniet one, and it Is hoped that the railroad author ities will consider the matter. Special Orders for "The 5ew." Thk News today booked a raft of orders for copies during the Sam Jones meetings. Some of the orders were not accompanied by the cash, and these were Wt attended to. We cannot afford to keep credit accounts on this line of business. The Nkws will be mailed to any address at 10 cents per week, but the cash must always come down first One Char lotte man today subscribed for 12 copies to be mailed to friends in dif ferent parts of the country. Two Out of the 8ix Dead. In The New yesterday, mention was made of the serious sickuess of six people near Huntersvllle, from the grip. A postal card from Huu tersvtlle today Informs us that Mr Robert Barnhardt aud Mrs. W. D. Barnhardt died yesterday. Mrs. Robert Barnhardt Mr. and Mrs. H J. Washanu Miss Sloan and Miss S ten house are still iu a critical con dition. Tearing up a Railroad Track. There was a big row in Durham yesterday, over the attempt of the Richmond & Danville Company to tear up the track of the Durham & Northern road, on Peabody street Great crowds of people gathered, and despite the efforts of the police, a portion of the Durham A Northern track waa torn up. Several arrests were made. Oatohlug Blaok Perch. V Sims' pond Is a popular place for Charlotte' fishermen now. Yester day and day lefore Hue catches of black perch were made there, the Haberdasher bringing iu the ; boss string.
