Mieeler Wall Paper Co. CRAYON PORTRAITS. . l THE JlOSTH WILL BE00IL Says Henry WaUanoa Anont tits Parti .-an AptioruongreBt,"' 'f Charleston, S. C, April io. The Southern editors are eettin here in numbers. The 'fint arriva was Henry Watterson, who is tplec ture tomorrow n'wrht on "Money and Morals." In an interview today Mr Watterson talked politics to some extent. He said: , "I think the Republicans have bitten off more than they can chew. Their nlan 19 to secure, dunnjr tne two wars in which they possess the Uovernment, an legislation mat iucy will noH fnr ten vears. They do not exoect to carry the next House, but they hope by the addition of the - a 1 new States, and by an election law, which will enable them to carry few districts in the South, to put themselves in shaoe to carry the general election in 1892. I do not believe they will succeed. I think their extremism and excess will so react upon them in the North as to entirely negative any advantages 1 hev may acquire by forced legisla tioa." Speaking of the Democratic hope for the next election, he says: "i believe that the disintegration of the purely war party of the Northwest will continue ; but as to the hopes ol a Democratic victory at the next election, I have not changed my views that the Democratic party will still have to look to, and rely most certainly on, States like New York, New Jersey, Indiana, and Connecticut. It will require them, with the united South, to carry the election." Taking the new States into the Republican account of the outlook in 1892. he says he retards the out look as encouraging. If New York shall come to the convention united (or Cleveland, there is no doubt that he will be nominated : but ii such be not the case, the party must took elsewhere lor a nominee. It would be suicidal to take the nominee from New York State if it were divided, and there were an evident determination oi any considerable body to knife the party. uutsiae 01 ueveuna there is no one whom I think of now as the nominee, but no one knows what may happen. I believe if Cleveland should go back to the White House he will go as a Democrat, and not as a Mugwump, though I have nothing to say to them in this reference. 1 simply mean that I take no stock in the ideas of civil service reform, as they were advanced by the great mugwump leaders and newspapers and accepted bv Mr. Cleveland, be- vi 1. a 'It f Ai Has Just ; Arrived.
