A panic followed, and in the hurry and crush that en sued several people weie crushed to death. All eyea were directed to the catastrophe, and the young aud In nocent caue of It. Knurgeon seized the opportunity and appealed for funds to build a place that would accommodate the large crowds that delighted to hear the preaching. The irioney came In rapidly, and the re sult wns that the magnificent "Tab ernacle" In Ne vingtou, built to n: commodate i,0(H) persons, was soon erected with all the modern improve ments, among them being that when crowded the vast audience can all leave the building within a couple of minutes The cost of tho building was CHI, 322, and the great building was opened free of debt in lHlil. Thousands of Americans have heard him there, aud know how hard it is to ire t a seat on a Hunday. Few of them have unde stood his extraor dinary power of attraction. Mr. ttpurueon has been an iudefut igable worker. Everything he touch ed succeeded, lie told his congre gallon, that he should like to estab lish a pastor's college to train up young men for the Kaplist mini -try, and instantly the necessary itiuas flowed in which enabled the institu tion to be built and endowed, and it now sends out every year a goodly number of Hpurgeonites, wholesale, retail, and for exportation. Then he hinted that he should like to estab lish an orphanage, aud in the same way the thing was done. (Similarly he built almshouses, started a col portage association, and a lot of other things. The membership of the Tabernacle a few months ago was authorati vely set down at5,.'04 persons. Mr. Kpur geou's wonderful success as a minis ter seems to have been due in a great part to his sympathetic, sunny and brotherly disposition, hia humor and ready wit. Associated with these is the certainty and the consistency of bis teachings, which is also charac terized by an extraordinary simplic ity of expression, assisted by Upt illustration, tie nas been a dilllgent student of the Puritan divines, of Bunyan particularly. Hpurgeoti was known an a 1 i pt 1st. but he did not strictly represent that sect. He cal'ed himself u Particular H.iptlst of an advanced school of thought, and whit he believes his Immense Tabernacle congregation bslleves without di-miir or distrust. It has often been alleged that his creed I Hpurgennism, ami that his followers are Hpurgeonito-; ami the allegation Is pretty nearly trii". He did not atlect the merely clerical character. He did not like to bo ad dressed as reverend, nor to he rank ed as a clergyman. "I am a preacher and I try to do good by my preach ing; that Is all there is of my minis try," he has proclaimed more than once. It is in this fact that the secret of Mr. Spurgeon's success lies. He believed in himself. He believed in his divine mission. He believed that lie was specially appointed to (I id lo preach His Word, lie, therefore, dis pensed with arguments or religious ipiestious, and instead of encounig- lug reason among ins loiiowers tauurht them to believe what lie told them because Hpurgeon nuid so. II believed that uuless you are baptized you will be damned. There is to he no mitigation of punishment. While he always taught that hap tlsm should be administered to be lievers exclusively, he administered the Lord's supper to those whodilTer ed from him in this view. In Octo ber, 1HH7, Hpurgeon withdrew from. the liaptist Union, In announcing his decision to withdraw, and reply ing to his critics, he said : "To pursue union at the expense of the truth is treason to Jesus. To tamper with His doctrine is to become traitors to Him. We have before ;is; the wretch ed spectacle of professed orthodox Christians, publicly avowing iiuion with those who deny the faith, and deny the personality of the Holy titiost." Mr. (Spurgeon had long been contemplating the act of secession. He announced his determiuatiun of withdrawing if certain other clergy men, w ho wore for some reason dis tasteful to him, were not excommu. nioat d. Th is. of course, the union refused lo do. The resignation which he tendered was accepted, and the great church which he had built up went with him without a question. In connection with a number of ministers, Mr. Hpurge ui, not more than six months ago, issued the fol lowing confession of faith : We, the undersigned, banded to gether in fraternal union, observing with growing pain and sorrow the loosening hold of many upon the truths of revelation, are constrained to avow our firmest belief in the ver bal inspiration of all holy scripture as originally given. To us the Hible does not merely contain the word of God, but iu the word of God. From egluDlug to end we accept it. believe It, and continue to preach it.
