WASHINGTON OFFICE: Trade Press Building, 1209 G St. N.W. Edward A. Oldham, Manager. 12 PAGES. ABEL SATURDAY, AUG. 23, 1902. A CURE FOR TYPHOID. There is no disease, to which hu man flesh is heir, that is more gener ally dreaded than typhoid fever and the report that a new and thus-far successful treatment has been found by Chicago physicians, will be read with general interest. The nature of this treatment is given by a writer in the Chicago Chronicle, as fallows:, "People who are interested in the subject of typhoid fever and the designation probably includes most of the urban population will be glad to know that, according to good medical authority, there is substantial reason to believe that a specific remedy has been discovered for the disease. "It would be more .proper, perhaps, to say that it has been invented, as it is the result of synthetic chemistry directed toward a fixed object. "Typhoid germs will not live in nascent oxygen. That gas kills them. It has, therefore, been the aim of chemists to devise some combination which will liberate oxygen in the small intestine where the typhoid germs swarm. The difficulty has been that all the compounds hitherto ela borated have given up the oxygen in the stomach, while the seat of the trouble is fifteen feet further down. This fault, it is hoped, has beea remedied by the composition of a sub stance called acetozone. "According to physicians who have tested the drug it is not a patent medicine it reduces the temperature of a typhoid patient from 103 or 104 to 100 or even lower within 12 hours, and shortens the duration of the dis ease and convalescence from six or seven weeks to half that time, be sides rendering the patient compara tively comfortable and free from delirium during the whole period. "It is said that at the county hos pital, where the conditions are by no means favorable, fifty test cases have been treated with acetozone without a single death resulting. The normal typhoid mortality ranges from 8 to 10 per cent. "Physicians are traditionally slow to endorse any remedy that has not borne the test of a year's employment. Hence they do not yet unreservedly commend the new typhoid specific." It is of course too soon yet for the remedy to be pronounced an entire success, but further experiments will be watched with interest. TARIFF, THE REPUBLICANS NEMESIS. Secretary Shaw, who, by virtue of his position as a member of the Roose velt administration, is entitled to speak with authority says that any revision of the tariff at this time will be a concession to the Democrats, and that there must be no tariff tinkering at this time. What extremes are we coming to these days, anyway! Al though Secretary Root says that the only way to get at the trusts is to revise the tariff, and Chairman Bab cock of the Republican Campaign Committee has admitted that our tariff schedules enabled the trusts to fix exorbitant prices, and even though the Iowa Republicans say that the tariff does afford shelter to monopoly, still, the administration persists in standing by the present tariff, purely on the ground that to revise it would be a concession to the Democrats. Will the American people allow themselves to be held up by the trusts who are entrenched behind the monopoly sheltering tariff breastworks, every time they buy anything, will they al low American manufacturers to con tinue to use the tariff to extract high er prices out of them than their for eign price simply to save the Repub lican party the necessity of making a concession to the Democrats? Per haps they will, but somehow we can not insult their intelligence enough to believe that they will. The Raleigh Post observes that the President has at last struck the blow that will kill father. He says to the Republicans of the South to cease working for office and go to work for the party. . This paralizes at least 93 2-3 per cent, of each corpus of the party the only part not injured being nearest and including the feet. Nothing but .walking fortunately is left for them to do. BUNION,' jgL THAT WORKS BOTH WAYS. Every time a Republican tells about the commercial invasion of Europe he is furnishing the best sort of argu ment why the tariff should be re vised. If we can ship our goods to Europe and undersell her there, how in the name of reason can there be any danger of any destructive compe tition here? Every article almost that is exported to Europe is sold at a good deal lower figure than the same article is sold for here. The Republi cans tell us that they are sold at less than cost. Is it possible that they squeeze their own people so hard that they can go into the charity business after they get to Europe? It is either that or else they do not sell at less than cost there. The Republicans are welcome to either horn of the di lemma. If they do not sell for less than cost, why should they charge us so much mora for the same article? The Durham Sun perpetrates this: "One of our subscribers who presumes that editors know ev erything writes to ask: 'Why don't the man in the moon mar ry?" Because he makes only four, quarters a month and can't afford it." Is this the Sun's own scintillating flash or. is it reversing the order of nature and shining by reflected light? CURRENT COMMENT. Of course it is annoying to have at our doors a city of refuge for thieves, in which, once entering, they can snap their fingers at American law. But if Canada, for the sake of getting i a percentage of the booty, chooses to be that city of refuge, she is within her legal rights. Still, self-respect is worth having, even as a colonial possession. New York Journal. The Birmingham distinct feels a sympathy with the striking miners up North and helps to support them, but really it is business for us to have that strike keep on; yet we are better than "business," and regret its long continuance. Birmingham Ledger. We regret that the "leading counsel for the United States"-in the Greene Gaynor case allows himself to "de nounce" the judge who decided against him on a point of law. A St. Louis belle summering among the Northern lakes acquired much fame by capturing a 10-pound pickerel with rod and reel. St. Louis belles, however, are usually out for bigger fish than that.
