Maj. J. E. Alexander, who Avent to Washington last week, settled a whis key tax case that had been pending for over thirteen years. Maj. Alexander thinks it was the oldest case in the dis trict. The amount 'involved was about $4,000. On May 20, 1SS9, suit was instituted in the Federal court at Greensboro against Mr. J. M. Adkins, of Mt. Airy, who. at that time, was engaged in the distillery business. It was claimed that he was due the National Government tax to the amount stated above. The defendant denied the claim and his counsel fought the case through - two terms of the court. He won in the first, but lost in the second. An appeal was then taken to the department at Wash ington. Every official below the Secre tary of State decided adversely to Mr. Adkins. Maj. Alexander is naturally elated over his victory, as judgment had been secured against his client, who is quite wealthy. The case was dismissed with out the payment of a dollar. Yinston Sentinel. CARRIE AT THE FAIR. There's no doubt but that the State Fair will be the hugest kind of a suc cess now, for an announcement of "ex traordinary and dazzling exuberance" as the circus bills would remark has been made. Come closer, and listen. It is that Carrie yes indeed Carrie Nation is goin to visit Raleigh during the State Fair. Secretary Pogue has had a letter from her asking permission to speak in front of the grand stand on temper ance and such like topics. Did the able secretary tell her to come? What a question! He did not wire, as feared she might think we were two anxious to have her with us, but those who know said he took on an automobile move from his office to get a letter in the return mail. Whether or not Mrs. Nation will brind her hatchet with her is not known. When Secretary Pogue is asked this question he smiles one of those mysterious and gloomy kind of smiles that mixes you up as if you were dodg ing a triple X high ball with all kinds of curious frescoes to it, but Carrie is coming to the State Fair! The band will now perform. Raleigh News and Observer. Augusta Evans Still Writing. (From the New York World.) After a silence of 15 years, due to shattered health and the sorrows of widowhood, Augusta Evans Wilson has spoken to the world through fresh pages of fiction. In a way, her new book, "A Speckled Bird," is the mark of her golden jubilee in authorship, for 50 years have elapsed since the output ting of her first story, "Inez A Tale of the Alamo." Mrs. Wilson is a South ern woman, and, while not at all of the "new" order, is thoroughly and keenly upto the spirit of the times. The fact that her books, particularly "St. El mo," are still read and discussed, though a generation has succeeded that for which they were written, is but a reflection of her own vitality. Publish ers learned to appreaciate her work very quickly. For "Vashti," which ap peared after "St. Elmo," a check for $15,000 was given while the story was still in manuscript. Mrs.. Wilson has a stately home in Mobile, which is in variably pointed out to visitors to the city. The scriptural age limit is still ahead of her, and it is by no means to be assumed that "A Speckled Bird" published today by Dillingham will be the last cf her pen offerings. A MOST GRATIFYING REVELA TION. The talking machines used flat rec ords which were sold, in past years, in competition with the graphophones using cylindrical records, were fa mous for their scratch and num erous other disagreeable features. But the advantage of flat in destructible records, if they be made acceptable in qual ity, were long since recognized and in the hands of the Columbia Phonograph Company, pioneers and leaders in the talking machine art, this type has been perfected and the records so greatly improved that they are now a most gratifying revelation. The supply of these goods has been unequal to the demand but plans are now perfected to produce them in un limited quantities and orders will be promptly filled. The Disc Graphophone is hade in three types, selling at $15, $20 and $30. Seven-inch records 50c each, $5 per dozen; 10-inch records, $1 each, $10 per dozp. The Graphophone and Columbia records were awarded the Grand Prize at the Paris Exposition of 1900. The Columbia Phonograph Com pany, 110 East Baltimore street, Bal timore, headquarters for grapho phones and talking machine suDDlies of every kind, will send you catalogue on application. - 28-2t Appendicitis never comes from seeds of kindness. We had the oddest dish imaginable served to us at a girl's luncheon the other day. It was boiled eggs served in quaint china egg cups. As we had gotten down to coffee and bonbons when the eggs made their appearance, they created quite a sensation. The first thought was of ices in a novel form; but inspection showed that the shells were of the bona fide barnyard variety. However, the shell when broken with our spoons revealed tis sue paper instead of albumen. The pa per in every case inclosed a delightful little silver souvenir of the occasion. On pulling out our treasures, we found that the eggs were hollow shells. The gifts had been inserted through a large opening hidden by the egg cup. Mary Dawson in Good Housekeep ing.
