The cold weather and heavy quilts always go together and this morning a quilt was the principal object of interest in the Recorder's c.mrt. 1 ,- Mary Saunder's, colored, was charg ed wi;h the embezzling of a quilt from Mrs. A. C. Burnett. . Mrs. : Burnett claimed that she had given the. quilt t; the negro to sell. The negro claim ed that she had "washed the quilt out,'' moaning that she was paying for it by washing for the owner. As the case threatened to be a long-drawn one- the Recorder told the negro to send for the much discussed quilt and after half an hour's waiting it was brought to the police station, and turned over to the O'- ner and the case dismissed. A LOQUACIOUS PRISONER. Luther Williams, white,"was arrest ed cn the instigation of Kres Chris, a young Syrian, who keeps a fruit stand on the Central hotel corner. Williams was charged with using profane lan guage and obstructing the side walks. Chris was sweeping and tried to get Williams to move on, which Williams was in no hurry to do. Williams was charged with the costs this morning. After Williams was carried back to his cell he showed a disposition to be loquacious and was also rery anxious to get out. He called Officer Duke back and asked the officer if he could h'A release him; The office4 was5, of (nursp, unable to) grant Williams' re quest; and he Was5 left in WsJ Cell. W,- Leo & Co. say: Buying in of something like 100,000 bales of short cotton by New Orleans late in a turned market and a further advance took i place this morning. May sold over 11,30 and at one time was but 12 points from the top, after showing a 57 point break yesterday morning. The recuperative powers of - the market . are phenoni enaL Thee was, no , end of, . cotton thrown on the market today and yet prices held remarkably steady. . Of course; the tone : was . feverish, but most 'of 'the day May sold at. 11 1-4 cents, and in view of yesterday's break this was a wonderful recov ery. Either the crop is very short and we are on the way to much higher prices or we have had .our big ad vance, and this recovery is simply ;-e aftermath. We confess our inability to decide the' question. It would seem as though a halt was due on such enor mous receipts as we are getting. But this all depends on the size of the erop, , which one knows. If It is very short, we can see 12 cents before Christmas. But there are many fac tors at work here now that operate against a wild advance and it is an open question whether the actual sup ply is so deficient that a further ad vance must take place, irrespective of big receipts, weakening statistical figures, profit taking and unprofitable trade. So far it looks as though profit taking around these figures wornd prove wise, It is a strange position and one in which a trader has noth ing in the past experience to guide him. Tht young mn win spnd a year on a cotton plantation and so aequiro practical xpritncg which lattr thiy will employ in the German colonies, Tht gtndents will sign contract to spend ft number of years In the service of the German eoI onial society for the purpose of in troducing the growing of cotton after the American system. The enterprise is the outgrowth of a suggestion by the German consul at Galveston who un dertakes to make the arrangements for the preparation of the students. ' . The society lias lust sent a Texan named Baker to Dar Ec Salaam in Ger man East Africa, who .will be the first American cotton expert, to arrive there. The latest reports from German East Africa indicate that interest in cotton growing is spreading . and that many new communities are engaging in the industry. The crop this year will be the largest known there. Expert Bak er's work will consist principally in finding new localities, adapted for the erowine of cotton. The colonial secre tary points to recent speculation in the American market as a reason ior seen ing to, if possible, to make German in dependent of the American supply. : TODAY'S NEW ADVERTISEMENTS Finest residence Corner in Charlotte for sale.
